How former Michigan players are faring in professional basketball
At last count, Michigan had 14 players still playing professional basketball around the world in 2010.
Some, like Chris Hunter and Juwan Howard, made the NBA. Most bounced from country to country, filling their passport while trying to make a living in the game they once starred in while playing in Ann Arbor.
Where are they?Â
Josh Asselin (1998-2001)
Asselin played for three different teams in 2009-10, two in Spain and a brief two-game appearance with BC Donetsk in the EuroChallenge and VTB United League. In Spain, he started the season with Cajasol Sevilla of the ACB (Spain’s top league) before moving to C.B. Murcia for the rest of the year. He averaged 7.7 points in 22.4 minutes in 12 games with C.B. Murcia and 2.7 points in 16.3 minutes during six games with Cajasol Sevilla. His best game came April 4 for C.B. Murcia, when he scored 15 points in 30 minutes in a 96-92 loss to Valencia BC.
LaVell Blanchard (2000-03)
Blanchard spent 2009-10 in the Ukraine, playing for Khimik-OPZ Yuzny. He averaged 11.9 points and 5.1 rebounds in 22.1 minutes for Khimik during the regular season and 17 points and 9.3 rebounds during six EuroChallenge games. His best game came in the EuroChallenge, when he scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had three steals in a 84-78 loss to APOEL.
Louis Bullock (1996-98)
Bullock spent his year with Real Madrid, which finished in third place in the ACB (Spain’s top league). In 26 ACB games, Bullock averaged 10.9 points and 20.2 minutes, including a 27-point, two assist game against Xacobeo BS on Dec. 13. In 18 Euroleague games, Bullock averaged 6.9 points in 14.5 minutes, including shooting 92.5 percent from the free throw line. His best game there was a 15-point, 4-rebound game against Panathinaikos on Dec. 17.
Graham Brown (2003-06)
Brown spent his year in Belgium playing for the Antwerp Giants. In 27 BLB games (the highest Belgian league) Brown averaged 9.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and shot 60.8 percent from the field, including a 17-point, 17-rebound game in an 82-78 win over Aalstar on March 7. In 14 EuroChallenge games, Brown averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and shot 60 percent from the field. His best game was a 14-point, 13-rebound game against Roanne on March 9.
Travis Conlan (1995-98)
Conlan played in Belgium in 2009-10 for Dexia Mons-Hainaut in the BLB, averaging 2.7 points and 2.6 rebounds during 20 Belgian League games. He scored in double figures once, against Charleroi on Dec. 11, when he had 12 points. In six EuroChallenge games, he averaged 2.2 points and 3.8 rebounds.
Jamal Crawford (2000)
Crawford played in 79 games for Atlanta during the regular season and in the first two games of the Hawks’ first-round playoff series against Milwaukee. Crawford averaged 18 points and three assists a game in the regular season despite not starting a single game. He averaged 31.1 minutes a game and scored 33 points - his season high - against Toronto in a 106-105 loss on March 17.
Daniel Horton (2003-06)
Horton spent his season in France, playing 10 games for Hyeres-Toulon Var Basket in the Pro A, which is the first division of the top French basketball league. He averaged 3.4 points and 3 assists in 10 games for Hyeres-Toulon, including an 8-point, 7-assist game against ASVEL on Jan. 3.
Juwan Howard (1992-94)
In his 16th season in the NBA, Howard played in 73 games and started 27 for the Portland, averaging 6 points and 4.6 rebounds. The Blazers are again in the playoffs, facing Phoenix in the first round, where Howard has played 13 minutes a game and averaged 3.0 points.
Chris Hunter (2003-06)
After starting the season in Fort Wayne of the D-League, Hunter was called up to the Golden State Warriors before the season started. And he stuck. Hunter played 60 games for Golden State, starting nine. He averaged 4.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 13.1 minutes a game. His best game came in a 124-121 loss to the Lakers on March 15, when he scored 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
J.C. Mathis (2004-05)
Mathis spent part of the season with Idaho of the D-League, where he played 11 games. He averaged 3.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 14.2 minutes. He scored in double figures just once, against the Bakersfield Jam on Dec. 19. Then he went to Spain, where he played with Oviedo Feve Baloncesto in the EPA (low level) league in Spain, where according to the team Web site he averaged 10.3 points in 7 games.
Brent Petway (2004-07)

Petway split his team between Greece and France in 2009-10. In Greece, he played six games with Ilysiakos Athens, averaging 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in 28.5 minutes including an 11-point, 10-rebound game against Olympiakos in his final game there. Then he played seven games with JA Vichy Val d’Allier Auvergne basket, averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 23.4 minutes, including a 16-point, 10-rebound game in a 74-69 win over Strasbourg on April 10.
Jevohn Shepherd (2005-09)
Played 11 games for the Halifax Rainmen in the Premier Basketball League (low level Canada, U.S. and Puerto Rico league) this season, averaging 8.5 points in 10.9 minutes. His best game came on Jan. 28 against Capitanes, when he scored 24 points on 6 of 10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in a 108-101 loss.
Courtney Sims (2004-07)
Sims bounced around the world in 2009-10. He started his year playing for CSKA Moscow - one of the best teams in Europe. He played one game on Jan. 7 against U. Olimpija, scoring 6 points in 12 minutes during an 80-77 win. Then he returned to the United States and played 14 games in the D-League with Iowa where he averaged 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds, including a 30-point, 12-rebound game against the Los Angeles D-Fenders on Feb. 16. His next stop was Puerto Rico, where he played in five regular season games and three PBL (a low-level league in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada) games for Capitanes de Arecibo. In regular games, he averaged 9 points and 4.4 rebounds. In the three PBL games, he averaged 22.3 points and 14.7 rebounds. His latest stop was in Belgium, where he played two games and averaged 7 points and 7 rebounds for TEC Spirou Charleroi, which continues its regular season in Belgium’s top division through May.
Jerod Ward (1995-98)
Ward spent his year with Fundacion Adepal Alcazar, a mid-level team playing in the LEB Silver division in Spain. In 18 games, he averaged 14 points and 6.9 rebounds, four times scoring more than 20 points. His best game came on April 15, when he scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds in an 84-78 win over Caja Rioja. His season continues in the playoffs, where his team plays Prat Juventud on Friday.
Chris Young (1999-2002)
Young is playing for the Passe-Partout Leuven Bears in the top division of Belgian basketball. He’s averaged 11.2 points and 7.5 rebounds. His best game to date was a 14-point, 15-rebound game against Aalstar on Feb. 13.

InRichRod, From what I could find, Dion Harris wasn't playing anywhere this year. Eurobasket, which is pretty up on these things, didn't have a single statistic for him this season. Another reader did point out, though, that Robert Traylor is still playing some ball in Puerto Rico. I missed him during my search for players and on the list I got from Michigan of guys still playing.
