Courtney Boylan comes up big down the stretch of Michigan women's basketball team's win at Wisconsin
A little tenacity from Courtney Boylan helped the Michigan women’s basketball team pick up a key Big Ten win at Wisconsin on Saturday.
The 5-foot-7 guard scored the Wolverines’ last six points over the final 81 seconds of the game, including the game-winner with eight seconds remaining in a 68-66 victory in front of 8,611 at the Kohl Center.
“(Boylan) is a kid that has the ability to get down in the paint and score on anybody,” Michigan coach Kevin Borseth said. “She's very crafty, she's strong, she's got great hands and has great hang time. When she scores, it doesn't look like she can do it, but she's very good around the basket."
Wisconsin guard Alyssa Karel called Boylan’s effort “relentless.”
“She’s a little undersized, but she’s tough,” Karel said. “She takes it at you like she’s 6-foot.”
The Badgers (14-12, 9-5) led 64-60 with 2:27 to play, but Michigan (16-10, 9-5) outscored the Badgers 8-2 in the final 2:04 to seal the victory.
Boylan tied the game at 64-64 with 1:21 left in the game to start her six-point run. Wisconsin’s Lin Zastrow answered with a jumper 21 seconds later to give the Badgers their final lead of the game.
Boylan sealed the victory with back-to-back baskets in the final 44 seconds.
The win moves Michigan into a third-place tie with Wisconsin in the Big Ten standings. The Wolverines haven’t finished in the top three of the conference since the 1999-2000 season.
"There's no question this was a big game for either one of us,” Borseth said. “For us it was a very good win to have, and I thought it was a very well-played basketball game.”
As key as Boylan was down the stretch, Rachel Sheffer carried the Wolverines for much of the game. She scored a game-high 22 points - her second career 20-point game - on 10 of 15 shooting. Four of her five missed shots were from 3-point range.
Michigan led 39-27 with 15:16 left in the second half, but the Badgers cut that lead to just three points over the next two minutes. Michigan answered with three consecutive 3-pointers, including two by Kate Thompson, to stretch the lead back to 10 points with 10:10 remaining.
Wisconsin had another run left, however, and the Badgers took a 59-58 lead on a Jade Davis 3-pointer with 3:51 to play. That’s when Boylan took over down the stretch.
Thompson scored 17 points and Boylan finished with 10. Davis scored a team-high 14 points for Wisconsin while Zastrow scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
