All tied up: Michigan shares Big Ten basketball title after Ohio State tops Michigan State

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan basketball team did its job in State College, Pa., then hopped on a plane.

Ohio State and senior guard William Buford took care of the rest.

The Buckeyes beat Michigan State 72-70 in East Lansing on Sunday -- three hours after the Wolverines beat Penn State 71-65 -- to create a three-way tie atop the final Big Ten standings.

Buford scored a game-high 25 points, including a high-arcing jumper from the top of the key that gave the Buckeyes their final points with 1 second left in the game.

After three timeouts, a desperation heave by Michigan State's Draymond Green at the buzzer missed the mark.

The No. 10 Buckeyes (25-6, 13-5) earned a share of their third straight conference championship and forced the No. 5 Spartans (24-7, 13-5) to settle for having a piece of it along with No. 13 Michigan (23-8, 13-5).

The Wolverines, who won their first Big Ten title since 1986, arrived back in Ann Arbor in time to watch the end of the game from its Player Development Center.

Buford scored just four points when Michigan State ended Ohio State's 39-game home winning streak last month. He returned the favor with his game-winning shot and by scoring 19 points in the second half, giving the Spartans their first loss at home this season.

Green had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Michigan State, which had a two-game lead in the conference race with two games remaining. The Spartans held a banner-raising ceremony after the game.

Ohio State trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half.

Michigan State remains the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which starts Thursday in Indianapolis. Michigan will be the No. 2 seed.

Chrysler/Crisler : Crapping car, crappy arena. One needed a government bailout, one needed an OSU bailout. They have quite a bit in common. I am sure fiat is proud.

Really? That was the best you could come up with? What happen to all the talk "Izzo doesn't lose on Senior Day"? Actually, both UM and MSU should be proud. Neither team was supposed to win the conference title. I hope the two teams meet again in the B1G Tourney. I'd love to see Michigan make it 4 of the last 5 vs. Sparty.

That's your spin. The real story is MSU didn't take care of business and beat OSU for the OUTRIGHT Big Ten title. BTW, are you blaming the "crappy arena" for MSU's loss there?

I'd like to congratulate the UM Wolverines for winning their first Big Ten championship since the 1980's tonight, 3/4/12, when OSU won against MSU. I also would like to congratulate OSU for winning yet another of their many recent Big Ten Championships tonight 3/4/12 when they beat MSU. I would like to furthermore congratulate MSU...a team that started the season unranked... for winning yet another of their many recent Big Ten Championships last week... all on their own. The End. signed, Goofus. See you in the Tournament.

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 2:59 p.m.

You can try to arrange it as pretty as you can make it, but in the end Michigan and Ohio State earned their share, their equal share, of the Big Ten Title just as MSU did. 13-5, 13-5, 13-5. They weren't given anything. You can factually state MSU HAD their destiny all in their hands, to be the undisputed Big Ten Champions...then they blew it. MSU didn't give those losses away charitably, but their opponents took those wins, forced a loss on MSU's record.

Goofus Try to stay with me on this. I w i l l t r y t o g o s l ow . If MI did not beat osu, moo u has no part of the title because osu would be 14 and 4 in the conference! And I believe moo u finished 13 and 5! W a s t h a t s l o w e n o u g h ?

For all the bluster that the Fab Five brought to UM, unheralded Novak, Stu, Cronin and Person just won something that supersedes anything that the Fabs ever accomplished. And they did it without bravado, without complaints, without embarrassing the school. That is the best graduation present either of these guys can get. Championship immortality

heartbreakM

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 3:58 p.m.

@The Way: We agree to disagree, then. Let's take a time out. I see I've hit a nerve, but I'll take this team with its actual championship ring over the Fab Five with potential. This team has the heart of a champion and actually, they are champions (co-champs, that is). And please tell me any time that the current team came close to 34 turnovers or tell me when Burke had sloppy play in the name of bravado? I think we are all on the same sideline here, but let's laud this team for its accomplishments despite the lack of bluster.

TheWay

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 8:26 a.m.

A bunch of true freshman had 34 turnovers in their first game as collegians? OH MY GOD THEY MUST HAVE NO FUNDAMENTALS! Nevermind they won the game by more than 25. Child, please...

TheWay

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 8:23 a.m.

Come on, HeartbreakM. You're smarter than that, aren't you? You know the current players aren't being marketed like the Fab 5 were. Not even in the same universe. The complains they had were legit, just as the complaints some players around the country have these days are legit.

heartbreakM

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 4:33 a.m.

I am a Michigan fan first and foremost (though I did quite a bit of complaining about the former football coach but that was out of my love of Michigan). Fab five were not my favorites compared to their predecessors. like the 1988-89 team I loved watching them, but didn't like their lack of fundamentals (34 turnovers in their first game against Univ of Detroit), and I always felt that the seniors on that team got short shrift--especially when Voskuil saved that Final 4 game against Cincinnati. It's supposed to be a team, not a 5 against everybody situation. But those guys were Hollywood compared to this group of seniors who were not considered by anybody. And it always burned me up that Webber would complain about being paid and how he had no money (yeah, right) while they knew the deal before they came to college. Have you ever heard a peep of complaint from our current seniors? I think they appreciate their situation and really led by example, and now have rings.

jcj

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 3:58 a.m.

Enough whining about the Fab Five. I would bet the farm you were happy to watch them when they were playing!

heartbreakM

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 2:10 a.m.

@TheWay: Using that logic, I'd say that MSU's championship this year (before the B10 championship game) is worthless because the B10 was as bad as it has ever been, and that any team winning the B10 over the last five years in football or basketball haven't proven anything... You can only win against who you play. I take NOTHING away from this team of winners and Wolverines. Fab 5 lost to Northwestern on the road when NW was not a good team, and therefore lost the B10 crown. This team won when it had to.

TheWay

Mon, Mar 5, 2012 : 1:40 a.m.

To be fair, they also did it against a weaker conference. The Big Ten was at arguably its strongest ever when the Fab 5 were here.

Yup, we "blew" a lead after one of our starters went out. But, while Jalen Rose begs to have your tainted banners back, did you notice all the legitimate ones hanging in the Breslin Center? CBS made a point of showing them. Also, yes UM is a co-champ, congrats--you earned it. Just don't be too disappointed when the NCAA seedings come out and you see how your team is viewed when compared to MSU. Wow, Wal-Mart wolvies enjoying an MSU loss more than a UM win. Interesting, no?

Oh Rly...might be interesting if it were true. Unlike Sparty, we never enjoy your losing more than our own victories. MSU's complete meltdown over the past two games was enjoyable only for the fact that it made Michigan's past two victories count towards a B10 Championship. Other than that, what happens in E Lansing stays in E Lansing. No one else cares.

It's funny how all week sports writers and radio personalities were trying to make a big deal out of U of M fans "rooting" for ohio for this game. No Real U of M fan Ever "roots for" ohio, they simply "root against" the Spartans, it doesn't make you "root for" their opponent, get it right! Geesh! The "other team" is just another team, you don't acknowledge their filthy existence in any way if they are ever ohio or msu. There is simply one team you want to lose more sometimes and the other team is just the opponent of who you want to lose. You don't say ohio beat msu, you say msu lost, that's it. Great Win Michigan, Fantastic Season guys, so full of memorable moments. A lot of us weren't happy that what's his face left early for the NBA ( mistake on his part I believe ), but I will take Burke any day of the week. This kid is a true warrior. Hail Yes! You bet I was supporting the buckeyes to pull it off. What made it a great win was the look of shock on the faces of those cocky Spartan fans after ohio went up 72 to 70 with 1.0 seconds left. I don't know how Izzo got away with calling a time out when time expired. I don't know how to happy: Michigan earned a tie for the regular season Big 10 title or the greif and shock in Sparty nation that their team blew a 15 point lead-at home. SalineBob: Earlier in the game, the fans looked very confident (as even our fans would), they were wearing their Spartan head garb, jubilant and cheering loudly. They seemed certain of a victory (as did I), then to see the sudden change as ohio put themselves ahead with almost no time left, the look of despair and greif was rather amusing. In all fairness, Spartan fans have nothing to be ashamed of; but they cannot claim the sole possesssion of first place.
