A preview of Wednesday's Olympic schedule, with an emphasis on athletes with Ann Arbor-area ties:
Now that Tyler Clary has Olympic final experience under his belt, the former University of Michigan swimmer is shooting for a medal.
The 23-year-old finished fifth in the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday.
Wednesday's Olympic schedule includes preliminary heats and semifinals for the 200 backstroke. Clary set an NCAA record in that event in 2009 and won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships.
"I'll take fifth place in my first Olympic final any day. My only goal for that event, and I consider that an off event, was to make finals," Clary told USA Swimming after the butterfly.
"So I'm satisfied for now. I'm really looking forward to (200 backstroke). It's something I've been looking forward to for weeks."
LOCAL OLYMPIANS
His time of 1:54.69 at the U.S. Olympic trials was a distant second to Ryan Lochte's 1:52.96. Ryosuke Irie of Japan has a qualifying time of 1:54.03. Lochte won gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing in a then-world record time of 1:53.94.
Clary swims in the third preliminary heat at 5:29 a.m. on Wednesday. The semifinals are scheduled for 2:51 p.m., with the top eight times advancing to Thursday's final.
Former Michigan swimmer Derya Buyukuncu, representing Turkey, will also compete in the 200 backstroke.
Water polo takes on Spain
Ann Arbor native Betsey Armstrong and the U.S. women's water polo team plays its second group play match of the Olympics at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday. The game will air live on NBC.
The Americans survived a pesky Hungarian team, 14-13, on Monday. Spain also won its opening game against China 11-6 to share the top spot in Group A with the gold medal-favorite U.S. team.
The eight-team field is broken down into two groups of four. The results from the preliminary stage determine the teams' seeding for the quarterfinals.
One more race for Schmitt
Allison Schmitt's medal haul probably isn't over.
The Canton High School graduate broke her own American record while winning a gold medal in the 200 freestyle on Tuesday, her third medal of the 2012 Summer Games.
After that race, Schmitt told reporters she's excited to get back to Michigan. She took a redshirt season from the University of Georgia to spend the past year training with former Michigan swimming coach Bob Bowman (and his prize pupil, Michael Phelps) in Baltimore.
Before she can head home, Schmitt will swim her final race -- and likely win another medal -- on Wednesday. She is part of the U.S.'s heavily-favored 800-meter freestyle relay team.
Schmitt won a bronze as part of the 400 freestyle relay team and won silver in the 400-meter freestyle.
