The best receivers in the country: Arrelious Benn, Dez Bryant an easy 1-2
I called Illinois junior Arrelious Benn the best receiver in the country in my preview today, and even if you disagree there's no debating he's in the elite category.
Benn and Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant are widely considered the best draft-eligible pass catchers in college football. They're remarkably similar. Both stand a shade under 6-foot-2, weigh about 215 pounds and have highlight tapes that make you drool.
On my personal list, I've got Benn No. 1 and Bryant No. 2. Bryant might be a slightly better return man, but Benn is a tick faster and I think held back some by playing with a less-polished quarterback.
Illinois coach Ron Zook said he plans to use Benn more as a return man and even lining up in the backfield this year.
"There's no question, Regis, we need to get the ball in his hands as much as possible," Zook said last week at Big Ten media days.
Along with Benn and Bryant, an almost interchangeable 1-2 in my opinion, here's my top list of college football's top receivers. Who are your top five?
1. Arrelious Benn, Illinois 2. Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State 3. Julio Jones, Alabama 4. A.J. Green, Georgia 5. Damian Williams, USC
Next five: Brandon LaFell, LSU; Michael Floyd, Notre Dame; Riley Cooper, Florida; Jordan Shipley, Texas; Eric Decker, Minnesota
