Steve Yzerman takes charge of the Tampa Bay Lightning; Tigers fall in Seattle and more links
Associated Press
Yzerman, introduced Tuesday as the general manager of the Lightning, said building an organization that competes for Stanley Cups takes time, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
"This is a long-term project for me," Yzerman said. "There is no easy fix. I don't sit up here with the notion I can wave a magic wand, make changes and we're a Stanley Cup contender. My intention is to improve the Lightning immediately. But the long-term goal is making this a perennially strong team that can content on an annual basis."
Red Wings beat writer Ansar Khan says Yzerman is stepping into an ideal situation.

I love Stevie and I hope he does well and I know he has a hockey IQ of 300 but how many stud jocks-turned-GMs have really been successful? Isiah? Jordan? Gretsky? McHale? Dare I even mention Matt Millen? Only Joe Dumars comes to mind and he is struggling right now! Steve Kerr is doing well I guess! Do you notice this does not happen in the NFL much? Does Stevie even have a high school diploma or a GED? Having hockey smarts is not the same as business smarts? Have these guys prepared a business plan before? Or even read one? Having an agent and lawyer weed through endorsement offers before you pick one is not the same as having a business acumen! Being a coach is different from being a player and being a player is different from being a GM! I wish him well - but the track record of stud players becoming GMs too fast is not good!
