Scrimmage notes and an odd moment for Michigan guard Stu Douglass

By Michael Rothstein

Stu Douglass made it about halfway down the Crisler Arena steps and almost to the floor when he realized what was going on. His partner in introductions, Michigan women’s basketball player Courtney Boylan, had froze long ago.

On the loudspeakers was the Wedding March and neither Douglass, a sophomore guard on the men’s team, nor Boylan - who are dating - knew what to do.

“I was trying to figure out who put that on and it was the girls’ side,” Douglass said. “So that wasn’t that bad.”

The pair not only went through introductions together but also partnered up in the three-point shootout, making 10 three’s.

They lost, though, to the team of Manny Harris and Carmen Reynolds, who had 11.

One rule: Don’t get hurt

Michigan’s men’s team scrimmaged for eight minutes - two four minute halves - to close out the mostly-entertainment Michigan Madness.

And while there wasn’t much defense being played, there was one rule: No one get hurt.

“It’s just like coach said, don’t take charges, don’t do anything, don’t play defense really,” freshman guard Matt Vogrich said. “Don’t get hurt. Just have fun. Just have fun.”

Not surprisingly, junior guard Manny Harris stood out during the short scrimmage, scoring 10 points.

Harris led all scorers and his team won, 28-17.

“It went OK. I was out there, just trying to be a facilitator and just get the ball to my other teammates and I think I did a pretty good job of that,” said freshman guard Darius Morris, who had three points. “They knocked down the shots. Overall, the whole team, the whole night, it was a good night.”

QUICKIE BOX: Zack Novak 2-3 6 pts.; Stu Douglass 0-4 0 pts.; Manny Harris 5-7 10 pts.; Darius Morris 1-1 3 pts.; Eso Akunne 0-2 0 pts.; Matt Vogrich 2-3 6 pts.; Blake McLimans 0-1 0 pts.; Eric Puls 1-1 2 pts.; Laval Lucas Perry 1-3 2 pts.; Zack Gibson 3-4 6 pts.; DeShawn Sims 1-4 2 pts.; Ben Cronin 2-3 5 pts.

The actual first practice

Before fans and media were let in, both Michigan’s men’s and women’s teams held their actual first practices of the year, the men going right up until the doors to Crisler Arena opened at 8 p.m.

Beilein called his team’s first official practice of the year “good.” Mostly, though, it sounded like an instructional session.

“About an hour and a half, great practice, worked on a lot of things, skill work,” junior forward Anthony Wright said. “Just a lot of mixing a lot of the younger guys with the older guys, talking, teaching.”

As for the Michigan Madness, Beilein sounded like this wasn’t a one-and-done proposition.

“We’ll learn and learn how to do it, find out where we can change things and what we can do but I thought it went off pretty well,” Beilein said. “Thought everybody had a good time.”

The women are really going to struggle this year. From the scrimmage they lack size and skill. Borseth will be answering questions after this year IF he can turn this program into a winner.
