Run Woodstock event is a groovy weekend on trails for runners, campers

By Bison Collins Messink

The second annual Run Woodstock, put on by Running Fit, is a weekend running camp for adults.

The event, which starts Friday and concludes Sunday, features continuous live music, overnight camping, and eight trail runs at Pinckney Recreation Area and Hell Creek Ranch ranging in distance from 5 kilometers to 100 miles. Registration for the event is open online, and participants can also register at the event. Visit runwoodstock.com for information and registration.

According to Run Woodstock organizer and Running Fit co-owner Randy Step, most participants run four of the shorter runs. But it’s the time between the runs that really makes the event unique. “It’s a run, camp, mellow out kind of a weekend,” Step said. Highlights of the weekend schedule include the Friday night 5K beginning at sunset, a Saturday afternoon yoga break, and guitarist Lemon James kicking off the weekend with the national anthem prior to the Friday runs. At the end of the weekend awards are given out for “Hippest Hippies,” “Hippest Vehicle,” and a Campsite Award for “the most far out campsite.” The music, camping, and start/finish line (which is marked with Step’s ’72 Volkswagen bus) are at Hell Creek Ranch, a private campground owned by Forbidden Wheels Motorcycle Club. But the running trails loop through Pinckney Recreation Area. The longer runs take place on a 16.6-mile loop that passes through the campground. “These guys running a hundred miles keep floating through all the time while you’re listening to music,” Step said. “On Saturday, they come cruising through looking like zombies.” Aid stations will be set up at intervals along the loops, providing cots, refreshments, and an assortment of hot and cold foods. “People that run long eat strange things,” Step said. Last year’s event had about 500 participants. Step expects that number to double this year to 1,000, but that is still 349,000 people short of what Step ultimately has in mind. “We’re just short of selling out,” he said.

Want to clarify that Run Woodstock is not a running camp. Run Woodstock is a running event with multiple running distance options Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, 5 bands playing awesome music Friday and Saturday, and the opportunity to CAMP at Hell Creek Ranch in Pinckney for the weekend.
