Recuperating Michigan baseball team blasts Iowa, EMU tops Bowling Green

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan baseball team is getting healthy. An 11-0 win at Iowa on Friday night should help them feel better, too.

Senior pitcher Brandon Sinnery threw a six-hit shutout and senior catcher Coley Crank hit a pair of home runs for the Wolverines, who had lost eight of their last nine games.

Sophomore outfielder Michael O’Neill returned from an injury for Michigan. In his first at bat since April 11, O’Neill singled, stole second base and scored on a Brett Winger single for a 1-0, first-inning lead.

O’Neill, who was hitting .332 before missing 15 games with an injury, finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman Will Drake also returned to the Michigan (18-27, 5-11 Big Ten) lineup for the first time since April 11, but went 0-for-4 as the designated hitter on Friday.

The Wolverines were 4-11 without O’Neill and Drake out of the starting lineup and dropped into last place in the Big Ten standings.

Crank (3-for-3, 2 walks) leads the Big Ten with 11 home runs after his three-run homer in the fifth inning and a two-run shot in the seventh.

Freshman Kevin White (2-for-5) hit his third home run in as many games and John Lorenz (2-for-4) had a two-run single in the eighth inning. (Boxscore)

With rain in the forecast for Sunday, the teams have agreed to play a doubleheader Saturday in Iowa City. The first game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.

MORE BASEBALL

Eastern Michigan 10, Bowling Green 3: EMU starter Neil Butara allowed three runs on six hits through eight innings and the Eagles capitalized on four Bowling Green errors to score eight unearned runs. Sam Ott went 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs, including a two-run double in the Eagles’ five-run third inning. Tucker Rubino (2 runs, RBI), Matt Hitt (run, RBI) and Lee Longo added two hits apiece. (Details)

MEN’S GOLF

MAC Championship: Eastern Michigan is in second place, 30 strokes behind Kent State, after the first two rounds. Kent State golfers hold three of the top five individual spots. EMU’s top individual is Brian Churchill-Smith (72-73—145), who is 1-over par and tied for sixth. (Details)
