Kylee Botterman wins all-around title, Michigan women's gymnastics qualifies for Super Six national finals
The Michigan women’s gymnastics team advanced to Saturday’s Super Six national finals with a second-place finish at the NCAA semifinals.
It’s the 10th trip to the Super Six for the Michigan program, but the first for a senior class that led the Wolverines on Friday at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland.
Senior Kylee Botterman, named the NCAA gymnast of the year on Thursday, justified that decision with four All-America performances (top four) and an all-around title during the first of two semifinal sessions.
Her all-around score held up through Friday night's second semifinal, making her Michigan's second all-around national champion. Elise Ray shared the title in 2001.
Botterman was runner-up on the vault (9.925) and floor (9.925) and fourth on the bars (9.825) and beam (9.850). Fellow senior Trish Wilson finished first on the bars, matching a career-best score of 9.925 and earning a spot in Sunday’s individual event finals.
Sophomores Brittnee Martinez (bars) and Katie Zurales (vault) also earned All-America first team honors with third-place finishes.
“It's the first since I've been here and it's my senior year, so I'm getting the girls pumped for (Saturday),” Botterman said. “We're excited with how we performed today, but we know we have a little bit of cleaning up to tomorrow in beam and Go Blue!"
Oklahoma finished first in the team standings with a total score of 196.775, followed by Michigan (196.700) and defending national champion UCLA (196.500). Alabama, Nebraska and Utah qualified from Friday's second semifinal.
Michigan coach Bev Plocki discussed what it will take for the Wolverines to win their first national title on Saturday:
"So much of our sport comes down to sticking the landings. And from a judging standpoint that seems to be the most important thing to getting a good score is sticking the landing,” she said. “So we are going to have to be on and not make any mistakes."
