Michigan wins first NCAA golf regional, senior Lion Kim is co-medalist

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Lion Kim’s senior season at Michigan already included an appearance at The Masters.

On Saturday, he added another significant accomplishment.

Kim’s career-best round of a 6-under-par 65 at Wolf Run Golf Course in Zionville, Ind., helped the Wolverines win the program’s first NCAA regional title and made him co-medalist at the three-day event.

And he did it on a gimpy ankle.

"I almost had to pull out because it was hurting so bad," Kim told MGoBlue.com. "I just knew I had to fight it out. As the leader and captain of this team, I just did not want to let my team down. I knew our team was a good team. We were just waiting for all five guys to really play well the same weekend. I just had a feel this would be a special week."

Michigan started Saturday’s play four shots behind co-leaders Illinois and Alabama, but the Wolverines’ 275 team score was six strokes better than any other team in the field. Illinois finished second, two strokes back.

Kim finished with a career-best three-round total of 205 (71-69-65), tying Illinois’ Luke Guthrie for medalist honors. Freshman Joey Garber shot a 209 (71-68-70) to finish tied for fourth individually.

Matt Thompson (68-77-68—213) and Jack Schultz (68-75-72—215) also finished among the top 20.

Michigan’s previous-best finish at an NCAA Regional was fifth in 2009, according to MGoBlue.com.

"Seeing these guys come under the gun and win this thing was just fun," Michigan coach Andrew Sapp said. "It was especially fun for me because the last three regionals we were sweating everything out until the final putt. This time we were just trying to win it instead of making the cut. It made it a lot more enjoyable for me, for sure. All five guys really had a great, great event. When you have four guys finish in the top 20 and two guys in the top five you know you are going to have a good chance to win."

The Wolverines advance to the NCAA Championships held May 31 to June 6 in Stillwater, Okla.
