Michigan basketball team travels west for a big game, other links

By Dave Birkett

The college basketball season isn't a month old and, but it's never too early to talk about tournament "profiles."

Last year, Michigan made the NCAA tournament based on the strength of a strong non-conference schedule that included wins over Duke and UCLA. This year, the Wolverines are looking for their first signature win - a win they could get tonight in a true road game at Utah.

The biggest problem that continues to plague the Wolverines is poor shooting, but John Beilein isn't panicking. Michigan is shooting 29 percent from 3-point range as a team.

For Utah, this matchup has been 21 years in the making - since Michigan lost to Alaska-Anchorage in the Utah Classic.

Michigan, by the way, is ranked 221st out of 347 teams in RPI, according to CollegeRPI.com.

Some non-basketball stories catching my attention this morning:

• Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham continues his to be the lone bright spot in the Wolverines' dreadful football season. Graham shared the Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award with Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark as the Big Ten's most outstanding player.

• The Heisman Trophy goes out this weekend, and StiffArmTrophy.com is predicting Alabama's Mark Ingram wins the award narrowly over Stanford's Toby Gerhart in its count of actual ballots posted by voters like me on the Internet.

• An Alabama columnist wants to thank Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez for helping the Tide reach the BCS title game.

• The Tigers traded their most popular player, center fielder Curtis Granderson, in a cost-cutting move.

• And if you still haven't had enough Tiger Woods, Deadspin.com details the secret sex lives of pro athletes, entertainers and the like. For those who think this Tiger thing doesn't go on elsewhere.
