Michigan State University hockey routs Michigan Tech, 10-1, in Great Lakes Invitational semifinal
DETROIT -- When Michigan State's hockey team came out rusty at last year's Great Lakes Invitational, Spartans coach Rick Comley determined his team needed more ice time over the holidays.
So this year, Comley put the Spartans through two-a-day workouts between Michigan State's last game and Tuesday's GLI semifinal against Michigan Tech at Joe Louis Arena.
The difference was clear.
The Spartans tallied the second-most goals ever scored in the GLI, overpowering Michigan Tech, 10-1, in the tournament semifinal.
Michigan State (13-6-2) will face either Michigan or Rensseaer Polytechnic in Wednesday night's championship game.
The Wolverines and Engineers play in tonight's other semifinal.
Michigan State took control in the second period, piling up 5 goals to take a commanding 8-1 lead into the third period. Brett Perlini led the Spartans with a pair of goals while Andrew Rowe tallied 4 assists in the victory.
"The bounces just went our way today," Rowe said.
Drew Palmisano made 28 saves in goal for Michigan State, allowing only a first-period goal to Drew Dobson.
The Spartans outshot Michigan Tech (3-15) 30-29.
