Michigan State hockey coach Rick Comley to retire after 38th season
Michigan State hockey coach Rick Comley announced today that he'll retire at the end of this season, making Michigan's Red Berenson the dean of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association coaches.
The 64-year-old Comley is in his 38th season of college coaching. The Spartans are currently 10-12-4 in his ninth season in East Lansing.
Berenson, 71, signed a new three-year contract in June that would keep him behind the Michigan bench through the 2012-13 season. He is in his 27th season with the Wolverines.
Comley, who also coached at Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State, is one of two head coaches to win NCAA titles with two different teams. He, Berenson and former Michigan State coach Ron Mason are three of the six coaches with more than 700 NCAA wins.
"This program is very special, with a long tradition of success. I am very proud that we could bring a national championship here in 2007, and not only have we had good hockey players in our locker room, we have had quality young men who represented this program well in the classroom and in the community," Comley said Tuesday. "I want to thank them, as well as my staff, for an experience at Michigan State that leaves me with many great memories."
Boston College's Jerry York (39 years) and Boston University's Jack Parker (38) are the NCAA's longest-serving college hockey coaches.
