EAST LANSING — One inning was all the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan softball team needed to beat intrastate rival Michigan State on Saturday at Secchia Field.

Freshman catcher Lauren Sweet hit a three-run home run as part of an eight-run fifth inning in the Wolverines' 8-0 victory over the Spartans (11-28, 0-10 Big Ten).

Six Wolverines tallied a hit in the game, led by senior center fielder Bree Evans' 2-for-3 performance. Junior shortstop Amy Knapp was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Haylie Wagner allowed two hits on two strikeouts to earn the win for Michigan (28-11, 9-1).

Softball

Toledo 8, Eastern Michigan 7 (8): In Toledo, Ohio, McKenna Russ was 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBIs, but the Eagles fell to 16-24 (4-7 Mid-American Conference). Jenna Ignowski allowed three earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout in five innings.

Baseball

Penn State 14, Michigan 1: In State College, Pa., the Nittany Lions (14-20, 3-5 Big Ten) had 17 hits against the Wolverines (16-20, 3-5). Patrick Biondi's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning drove in senior John Lorenz for Michigan's only run. Trent Szkutnik allowed six earned runs on five hits with one strikeout in two innings.

Central Michigan 8, Eastern Michigan 6: At Oestrike Field, the Eagles (15-19, 7-4 MAC) couldn't hold a 6-2 lead after four innings. Third baseman Ben Magsig and left fielder Daniel Russell hit home runs for the Eagles. Jeffrey Rousseau took the loss, allowing two earned runs on one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Men's Tennis

Michigan 4, Nebraska 3: At the U-M Varsity Tennis Center, sophomores Alex Buzzi and Barrett Franks won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, and teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles as the No. 22 Wolverines (14-5, 7-1 Big Ten) won their fifth consecutive match. Evan King also won at No. 1 singles for Michigan.

Women's water polo

Michigan 20, Notre Dame (Ohio) 4; Michigan 10, Indiana 7: At the CWPA Western Division championships in Bloomington, Ind., the Wolverines snapped a three-game losing skid to Indiana in the semifinals. The Wolverines will face Hartwick in today's championship game.
