More than 1,000 fans gathered at Alumni Field for the Michigan softball team’s home opener Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore second baseman Ashley Lane sent them home happy when her two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning led the Wolverines to a 4-2 non-conference win over Bowling Green.

Lane’s 11th home run of the season scored Amanda Chidester, who drew a one-out walk, and gave the Wolverines (32-2) their third straight comeback win. Freshman Lyndsay Doyle added an RBI single in the three-run fifth inning.

Lane, Chidester and Doyle finished with two hits apiece for Michigan.

Chidester’s bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the third gave tied the game at 1-1 and looked like it was the start of a Wolverines’ rally. But Bowling Green left fielder Rachel Proehl threw out Nicole Sappingfield at the plate and right fielder Abby Hanson made a diving catch on the warning track for the third out of the inning.

Bowling Green took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Michigan starter Stephanie Speierman allowed a bases-loaded walk to leadoff hitter Hannah Fulk.

Fulk had given the Falcons a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the third.

Speierman allowed three hits and one earned run through six innings. Michigan ace Jordan Taylor needed just 12 pitches to earn the save, striking out two of the three batters she faced in the seventh inning.

Welcome back, Hutch. In what other sport are you on a 33-game road trip before you even see your home field? Good to get these nerve games over with before the Big Ten is fully underway. I'm sure the top of the order knows it has to get on base more to make the offense work.
