Michigan soccer's Justin Meram invited to MLS pre-draft combine
The Wolverines' senior forward was invited by Major League Soccer to its 2011 Adidas MLS Player Combine.
Meram is one of 54 seniors from 36 NCAA Division I schools invited to the combine, the league announced today.
Michigan coach Steve Burns said Meram would have been considered a “sleeper pick” before this season and that a few MLS coaches were keeping tabs on him. Now, the secret is out.
“I just had a (MLS) coach text me the other day and say ‘God, I wish he was still my little secret,’” Burns said on Monday.
“He’s got some juice to his game that special players have. He’s the kind of player that gets you up out of your seat they’re the ones people pay money to see.”
Of course, Meram has one major commitment to fill before the combine.
When asked about his pro potential, Meram said he hasn’t been thinking about it, preferring to focus on Michigan’s upcoming national semifinal game.
He has been vital to Michigan’s run to the College Cup - college soccer’s equivalent to the Final Four - scoring 11 goals in Michigan’s last nine games. Meram is sixth in the nation in goals (16), fifth in total points (40) and has not been held scoreless in a game since Oct. 19.
The Wolverines play Akron on Friday night in Santa Barbara, Calif. (11 p.m., ESPN2).
Meram, a Shelby Township native, will be the seventh Michigan player to participate in the MLS combine, scheduled for Jan. 8-12 in Fort Lauderdale. It serves as a showcase for college seniors prior to the league's Jan. 13 draft.
Meram is a two-time second-team All-Big Ten selection in his two years at Michigan.
He spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Yavapai College in Arizona and won back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships and was the 2008 NJCAA Player of the Year.
