The first win of the first season is in the books for the Michigan men’s lacrosse team.

The Wolverines beat Mercer, 14-4, Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla., behind four goals and two assists from junior attackman Thomas Paras.

Michigan is now 1-5 in its inaugural varsity season.

"It's obviously pretty nice to get the first win,” Michigan coach John Paul told MGoBlue.com. “We saw a lot of improvement over the course of the week. A lot of that manifested itself two days ago (in a 9-8 overtime loss) against Jacksonville.

“We played our best game of the season to this point and we knew if we just continued to get better every day, which we've been doing this season, then this was going to come at some point so it's great to get it."

Senior attackman Trevor Yealy added three goals for the Wolverines, who led 6-1 at halftime.

Michigan hosts Loyola (Md.) in its home opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Oosterbaan Field House.

WRESTLING

Big Ten Championships: Kellen Russell became Michigan’s first four-time Big Ten champion when he beat Iowa’s Montell Marion in the 141-pound finals Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind. Only 10 other Big Ten wrestlers have won four titles. (Details)

SOFTBALL

Michigan 4, Temple 3: After going 3-for-3 in her previous at-bats, Michigan freshman catcher Lauren Sweet took one for the team by drawing a hit-by-pitch to force in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Freshman pitcher Sara Driesenga had a no-hitter through five innings, but Temple rallied for three runs in the sixth. Sweet also scored two runs. (Details)

Eastern Michigan 5, Gardner-Webb 0: Allison Scherer and Amanda Herron both drove in two runs and starting pitcher Jenna Ignowski allowed two hits over five innings for the Eagles. (Details)

BASEBALL

Xavier 5, Michigan 3: Xavier wiped out a 3-1 Michigan lead in its final two at-bats, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth innings to win the Snowbird Invitational game Sunday at Port Charlotte, Fla. The Wolverines’ Michael O’Neill went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. The sophomore outfielder has a 10-game hitting streak. (Details)

Wake Forest 12, Eastern Michigan 3: The Eagles took an early lead with two runs in the third inning, but Wake Forest scored at least one run in five of the final six innings. Bo Kinder and Brent Ohrman had RBIs for EMU. (Details)
