The Michigan hockey team's struggles continued on Tuesday night as it fell 5-1 to Bowling Green State at Yost Ice Arena in the second game of the teams' series which began in November.
Michigan won the teams played on Nov. 21 at Yost, 3-1.
Michigan was outshot 32-20 in the game. Luke Moffatt scored the lone goal for the Wolverines (7-11-2, 4-8-2-2 CCHA) on a redirection on a Mac Bennett shot in the second period to make the score 2-1. Bowling Green (6-10-5, 3-7-1-3 CCHA) responded with two goals in the period.
Adam Janecyk made his fourth consecutive start in net for Michigan, but was replaced by Steve Racine in the third period. Janecyk finished 15 saves while Racine stopped 12 of 13 faced in the third.
Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play, including a five-minute major the Wolverines failed to capitalize on.
"We couldn't generate anything; that five-minute major could have helped us, and we couldn't get it going," Berenson said in a post game press conference. "Our scoring chances when it was 2-1; we had great scoring chances, and (Zach) Hyman didn't score, and (Luke) Moffatt didn't score. Those chances you have to put them in; we didn't get a lot of chances. But, give Bowling Green credit; they got the goals they needed, and they played well."
Michigan defenseman Jon Merrill saw his first game action of the season after suffering a cracked vertebrae during the preseason. Merrill played exclusively on power plays in an exhibition game last Friday, but saw regular minutes on Tuesday.
"I will say in defense it was Jon Merrill's first game back and he played well and he played a lot. Our defense was tired," Berenson said.
Michigan faces Alaska-Fairbanks at Yost on Friday and Saturday (7:35 p.m.)
