Michigan hockey signee Jacob Trouba taken in the first round of the 2012 NHL draft
Jacob Trouba has yet to play a game for Red Berenson at the University of Michigan, but he's already made a name for himself.
Trouba, a 2012 Michigan hockey signee and incoming freshman, was selected Friday by the Winnipeg Jets with the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NHL draft.
He becomes the first member of the Michigan hockey program to be selected in the first round since Max Pacioretty went to Montreal in 2007.
The 6-foot-2, 193-pound defenseman played in 50 games a year ago with the United States National Team Development Program Under-18 team, which is located in Ann Arbor.
Trouba scored nine goals and had 22 assists on the season, and eventually helped win a gold medal at the World Under-18 Championships.
Despite being drafted so high, Trouba told the Detroit Free Press on Saturday that he still intends to play with the Wolverines next season.
"I'm going to Michigan next year to play there," he said. "I'm excited to get my education underway."
