A night after Michigan topped Michigan State by four goals, the Spartans did the Wolverines one better, winning the rematch, 7-2, Saturday night in East Lansing.

The Wolverines (4-4-1, 2-3-1-1 CCHA) have now split each of their first three CCHA series, losing the second game of each while going 2-3 in their last five.

Michigan State opened the scoring 34 seconds into Saturday’s game, and added two more 33 seconds apart six minutes into the game to go up by three.

Michigan got on the board with a goal from Cristoval “Boo” Nieves, before the Spartans added one more to go up 4-1 before the first intermission.

The Wolverines cut the deficit to 4-2 at the 11:52 mark of the second period, before giving up the final three goals of the game. Captain A.J. Treais had the Wolverines’ other goal, while Jacob Trouba, Luke Moffatt, Alex Guptill and Mac Bennett had assists.

Matt Berry finished with a hat trick on five shots to lead the Spartans.

Jared Rutledge made his second straight start in net for Michigan, after giving up one goal in the Wolverines’ 5-1 win Friday night in Ann Arbor. He gave up seven goals in 49 minutes Saturday while making 20 saves, before Steve Racine came in to finish the game.

The Wolverines were outshot on the night, 42-29.

Michigan returns home for a Thursday-Friday home series against Notre Dame, with both games scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
