The top-ranked Utah women's gymnastics team has had its troubles in Ann Arbor over the years, losing on six of its eight trips to compete at Michigan.

The Utes narrowly beat No. 21 Michigan on Friday night at the Crisler Center, but put up their second-lowest score of the season. Utah coach Greg Marsden said that had more to do with the judges than his team's performance.

"The score does not reflect what a good meet we had," Marsden told UtahUtes.com. "I'm not saying these judges are doing it wrong and other judges in the country are doing it right. It could be the other way around.

"The problem is there needs to be consistency nationwide. I feel bad for Michigan because scores count toward seeding into the postseason and it's not fair to either team."

Michigan lost its first home meet, 196.050 to 194.850, despite three individual event winners and an all-around win from sophomore Joana Sampson, who tied a career high with a 9.925 while winning the floor exercise. Sachi Sugiyama tied for first on the vault (9.900) and Katie Zurales tied for first on the balance beam (9.850).

Michigan led 49.100-48.850 after the first rotation, with the Wolverines on the vault and Utah on bars.

The Utes took the lead in round two after a 49.20 vault score edged them ahead of the Wolverines at the midpoint 98.050-97.825. Their lead would balloon to a point (147.150-146.075) after Michigan had to count a fall on the beam.

Pittsburgh 9, Michigan 8: Pittsburgh had four of its 17 hits in the top of the ninth inning, rallying for four runs against Michigan relievers Kyle Clark and Alex Lakatos. Freshman outfielder Will Drake went 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases in his first game as a Wolverine. Michael O'Neill (2-for-5, 3 RBI) had an RBI double and freshman catcher Kevin White added a two-run single in a three-run Michigan sixth inning that gave the Wolverines an 8-4 lead. (Details)

USC-Upstate 12, Eastern Michigan 1: Lee Longo had three of the Eagles' four hits and scored their lone run in a season-opening loss. Starting pitcher Steve Weber took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) in four innings. (Details)
