updated: Michigan freshman forward Daniel Milne leaves hockey program, signs with OHL team

Freshman forward Daniel Milne has left the Michigan hockey program team officials announced on Wednesday. Milne, a Unionville, Ontario native, appeared in seven games for the Wolverines this year and did not register a point.

Michigan coach Red Berenson said MIne informed the team he would be leaving on Thursday and Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League announced on their website that they had signed Milne on Thursday afternoon.

"Daniel Milne informed us today that he is leaving the Michigan hockey program. While we are disappointed with his decision, it is important to note that he is leaving in good academic standing," Berenson said in a statement.

“We are extremely thrilled that Daniel has chosen the Attack and the Ontario Hockey League to further his hockey career,” stated attack general manager Dale DeGray. “In 2010 we felt he was a player that could contribute greatly to our team and our feelings have not waivered in that regard. We are looking forward to him and his family being a part of our organization.”

Milne was drafted in the third round of the 2010 OHL draft by the Attack.

Early Thursday afternoon, Mark Edwards of HockeyProspect.com posted on Twitter that he had heard from multiple sources that an unnamed Michigan player had left the team for the OHL and the announcements from Michigan and the Attack soon followed.

The Michigan hockey team is 7-11-2 on the season (4-8-2-2 CCHA). The Wolverines play Alaska-Fairbanks at Yost Ice Arena on Friday at 7:35 p.m.
