Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez learning his fate today?; Don't fret if Brady Hoke is next U-M coach and more

By Kaleb Roedel

An awful lot was speculated, reported, tweeted, et al., but in the end nothing really happened on Tuesday regarding Rich Rodriguez's status as the Michigan football head coach.

Summed up the Detroit News columnist Bob Wojnowski, "It was one of the strangest days after one of the strangest seasons in the midst of the strangest coaching tenure ever at Michigan."

He later writes, "If Rodriguez is gone, as several media outlets have reported, it makes sense, and would end one of the most disastrous stretches in Michigan football history."

Hiring Brady Hoke would be like getting out of a stinky pool and jumping right back in. ESPN has a commentator who just said something I am pondering, all this talk of a "Michigan Man." Bo himself was not a Michigan man when he got here. Hoke was an asst for seven years. Does that qualify him as a "Michigan man?" He has coached in the Mid American conference and Mountain West. This year was 9-4, loosing overall record. Seems just like hiring a coach from the Big East. If Hoke is a Michigan man, then every Asst coach who passed through here over the years is too. Oh well, whoever it is should have a better year next year if the key players stay. But I do not expect Michigan to return to seasons like in the glory days. The SEC is locking up the best players by paying their fathers big bucks. The rest of the best go to OSU and "sell" stuff for their money(yuck, yuck). I think Michigan is in the same spot it was in when RR was hired and will end up as an MSU, firing the head coach every three years or so. Since Harbaugh is out of reach, I think the best coach for Michigan is Les Miles. Winner, did time here, and recruits in the region with the best players.

For those who are slamming Brady Hoke, I have 4 words for you: AUBURN COACH GENE CHIZEK. Check out his record at Iowa State and look where he is now.

Ok. ESPN is reporting AGAIN that Rich Rod is fired

WVU & OSU

Wed, Jan 5, 2011 : 11:05 a.m.

Full Disclosure: I grew up in Sandusky, OH - Loved OSU Football, hate Michigan - got engineering degree in Morgantown at WVU The win last night was great, the crushing of WVU by NC State not so good -- the crush of UM by another MSU on 1/1 awesome and predictable... That said -- As an outsider, I would love nothing more than UM to 'rise back' to their glory, for the sake of the climax of OSU UM rivalry of rivalries that has declined -- As another outsider looking in, proud UM alum and fans to look to their institution and what it stands for on its own, it is bigger than any one man.. I think UM and Brandon need to handle things. To look for a coach, while RR is a coach as a cushion of insurance, relief and security appears to be a lack of faith in your institution to stand on its own and to attract the best, as the opportunity presents itself....UM is bigger than Jim Harbaugh, it's bigger than Dave Brandon, Sue Coleman, Rich Rodriguez, and yes bigger than Bo Schembechler............................not Woody Hayes, though;) Start acting like it, and as a UM alum, fan or citizen, start demanding it from UM!

"@Blu-n-tpa I don't know what you're talking about! Look how accurate Theo212's game predictions were.. we DOMINATED Mississippi State in points allowed, our STELLAR defense set a new record in yards allowed! I mean look at this RECORD SETTING coaching staff! How can you say something bad when they SET NEW RECORDS every year?! Geez! Still, our KING.. he set several records himself, making him one of the most record setting coaches at Michigan! He's a HERO!!! (Hopefully this Wednesday morning humor isn't lost on anyone)" I didn't post this! Not sure how this popped up under my name, but this sounds like something Theo would write. Weird.

What is up with this AD? How long ago was the Ohio State game and what was he doing with his time? Make a decision and stop the Jerry Springer show in Ann Arbor.

I am keeping a new stat for this site... it is a list of the quality men and successful coaches that our "experts" like Tater and Portage have ripped. Not only have they ripped these successful and respected coaches, they have done so while they defend and support their man RR (usually in the very same comment): Bo Moeller LC Les Miles Jim Harbaugh Brady Hoke Jim Tressel Pete Carroll Who will be next? Mr. Crisler? Mr. Yost? Chip Kelly? Gene Chizek? Nick Saban? Gary Patterson? Bob Stoops? It is inevitable that they will try to drag down others such as these to somehow defend and try to show that RR is a good coach.

I just spent a little time on ESPN sifting through Hoke's SDSU schedule. While I'm pleased to see a winning record, and while the Aztecs looked pretty good in the Pointsettia Bowl against Navy, I'm still concerned about the number of points given up on the defensive side of the ball. This is what worries me: Brady Hoke will essentially be another Rich Rod with a pro-style look instead of a spread look. Puts up points on offense, yes, but still a weak defense. If anybody else has information about Hoke that could prove to be useful, I'm willing to listen. Saaaaaaay... what about Mike Leach? His team beat Michigan State in last year's bowl-even without him there!

Ben you almost had me in a time warp, a flash back. To some posting on this thread, nothing you write will overcome their delusions. When the one "who is always wrong" posts something I think "opposite day". (Like the Gator Bowl score. If you reverse his "projected score" it was closer to reality. As far as the new coach, any HIRE, any COACH, would be an improvement over RR. The defense and special teams would be better IMMEDIATELY just on the projection of actually having a COACH to help the players get better. tater How can you state Hoke would be a bad hire? How can anyone take you serious when you think RR is close to winning at Michigan? Based on what?

BO IS DEAD FOLKS!! MOVE ON, REALLY! This MICHIGAN man stuff is GARBAGE! Michigan football isn't even on the national scene anymore! How arrogant of Michigan to think that a 5-star recruit wet dream is to step into the big house, let alone a young, innovated coach (Urban, Leach, Patterson, Peterson) overall dream job is to coach the maize and blue! One man!? Michigan diehards think 1 man is going to be some type of instant 'savior' to a program that's languishing in scholarship talent/strength and speed? Putting all hopes/chickens into one basket is a bold assertion, folks! There are too many other exciting and attractive college football programs that compete with your team in A2 for it to ever really be the epicenter of football dominance again. Hold on tightly to those "Big or Biggest House" T-shirts, b/c they're all you've got left in terms of past hubris/pride. When the schools with warmer climates and innovative coaches come and start plucking your states 5-star recruits right out from under your noses, you know there lies a deep and inoperable problem! Jim Harbaugh is not the "end all" in terms of fixing the problem. 2 more years of mediocrity at least, no matter whom the head honcho is. Why not just ride the storm out with RichRod who's improved his record each year, despite the naysayers and never satisfied fan base. All the money being doled out simply to try to scale the top of an imaginary mountain in contrast to the multitudes of people who can't even afford a decent meal in this country alone....tragedy and shame! One man is not going to patch the bleeding! Sweater vest will continue to OWN Michigan! ESPECIALLY YOUR MICHIGAN MAN! Be content with your 8-4 or 9-3 season and the annual thrashing on New Year's day! I rather see my Blue contend for the national championship year in and year out! BO's mentality lives in A2 to this day and it lived with his pupils (Moller and Carr) be content winning the Big 10 championship and beating OSU! Well folks, you asked for it and you're gonna get it! YOUR MICHIGAN MAN whomever it may be! Peace out! Football mom of 2 signing off!!!!

NoBowl, don't fret Ohio State did snag that game and I have several Ohio friends and ya they enjoyed the win but their kind of sad to if you know what I mean, Mich needs to get back where it belongs, the big ten never really has been the same since Mich. fell off it's lofty perch.

OFK I see where you're coming from but DB nor the University released any info on RR being fired yesterday so the midia frenzy should be directed at out-FOX 2. It won't due to media loyalty, but it does change the perception of how this is playing out. But, I bet you RR's in there usiing the pressure of the ticking clock to squeeze every last nickel out of the University. He should have been fired "for cause" when the NCAA found him guilty but DB showed he had some class. Remember, "No good deed goes unpunished".

RR is just a cast of many coaches don't kid your self these coaches know what is at stake so don't be naive or shocked at anything any of these guys do case in point Pete Carrol, now there is a snake oil salesman and what does he get for his stink a nice lucrative NFL job. The fans have to clean this up cause the owners and AD's are only doing what they perceive the fans want, they might be right. When I speak of owners I'm speaking of NFL along with college. I think Harbaugh is our man he comes probably closest to want I want and I know we're not going to get Jo Pa unless he comes to us after he retires at Penn State. I want wins but I want to see integrity back at Mich, I guess you all can tell I'm old school hell, I'm retired.

"Winning, dynamic football is here at U of M!" I shouldn't even respond to that. I still haven't stopped laughing. Michigan State, who was DESTROYED by Alabama, was up 31-10 on this joke of a team. I was at the Wisconsin game. They ran at will. I think they punted twice the whole game and there were 2 turnovers, but other than that, they scored on every possession. They were beat by a total of 88 points in their last three games. The truth is the offense cannot move the ball against a competent defense until the game is already out of hand. If that's "Winning, dynamic football" then no thanks.

Larry Moe and Curly = tater, T212 and LS so those have already been taken. The use of words is the author's right and hypebole shouldn't be lost on some of the posters here. I mean how often has anything T212 been correct, but there he is still tilting at windmills. How serious can you be if YOU write "on the gusp" of turning it "around" after the last three football games? The last three years? To keep RR you would have to fire nearly every one of his assistants, and that would still leave Capt. Ahab in charge. As it is RR has cost or will cost the University nearly $1 MILLION for every win during his tenure. Buyouts, legal fees, salary, another buyout, and more, all for what EVERY talking head, football expert as stated that FIRING RR is the RIGHT move. When, if ever, all the insider stuff comes out it will show RR as someone who has very few morals.

@J Dean, you make a point and I think that's what most fans want. The point you express is screw the, "Mich. Man" stuff bring on a winner. I say again boys and girls, we better get this right or we could be in for a long haul. Let's see, Hoke worked for Carr and he did okay at San Diego state does that make him a sure thing? Remember many of us thought RR was a sure thing that includes me.

Wed, Jan 5, 2011 : 8:46 a.m.

Let me say something else for the record about all of this: I don't really care whether or not the next coach is a "Michigan man" or not (Bo Schembechler wasn't, remember that). All I care is that whoever it is respects our traditions and can win games, period. It's a nice idea to have a Michigan person as a coach, but if we get somebody who comes from Ontario who can take us to a 12-0 record, sign him up!

PortageLkBlu

I would like to see RR stay, does anyone know is RR still our coach? We need 3 things if we're going after a coach. We need a good stable person that happens to be a good coach, we need a great recruiter, and we need someone that wants to be at Mich. not just for the good salary but a man that wants to coach here. If they start haggling over money you don't want them. Mich. knows they have to pay a fair wage but isn't a Mich. man someone that also wants to be at Mich? Some of you guys flipped out big time over the last three years, my question to you is could you handle 4-5 years more of rebuilding with so so years because that's what it might take. Remember, if RR goes and he may I don't think we're going to fire the next coach in 3 years regardless of what you RR bashers want. Mich. does not want to be the next ND with a carousel of coaching changes. We better get this right boys and girls if we get it wrong this thing could drag on for years that being said, do you want to take a chance on Hoke, I don't.
