Kara Lynn Joyce hits the pool, Michael Phelps swims last individual event and more local highlights

A preview of Friday's Olympic schedule, with an emphasis on athletes with Ann Arbor-area ties:
After nearly a week of swimming at the Olympic Aquatics Centre, Kara Lynn Joyce finally gets her chance.
The Pioneer High School graduate will compete in the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries Friday morning. It's the only race of these Games for the three-time Olympian, who has won two silver medals on U.S. relay teams.
She finished fifth in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and was sixth in the 50 four years ago in Beijing.
"It is more than I ever thought I could accomplish," Joyce told AnnArbor.com before departing for London. "To have another shot is incredible.”
A decade after graduating from Pioneer, Joyce still holds the MHSAA state championship meet records in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. Her 200-yard freestyle record was broken in 2007 by current U.S. Swimming teammate Allison Schmitt, from Canton High School.
Joyce, who earned a trip to London by finishing second to Jessica Hardy at the U.S. Olympic trials, swims in the eighth of 10 preliminary heats that begin at 5 a.m. ET.
Her qualifying time of 24.17 seconds in the 12th-best. The top 16 times in the prelims advance to the 3 p.m. semifinals. The final is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Michael Phelps competes in the 100 butterfly semifinal on Thursday.

Michael Phelps has vowed that he will not swim competitively after these Olympic Games. That means there are two races left for the most-decorated athlete in Olympic history.
The former Michigan volunteer coach and Club Wolverine member -- who now owns 20 medals, 16 of them gold -- will swim the final of the 100 butterfly on Friday and the 4x100 medley relay on Saturday.
He's the top qualifier for the 100 fly, finishing a semifinal in 50.86 seconds, more than a half-second ahead of South African Chad le Clos, who upset Phelps in the 200 fly, and setting up a rematch with Milorad Cavic, the outspoken Serbian who still seems to think he got to the wall first when he lost to Phelps by a hundredth of a second four years ago in Beijing.
Cavic -- who lived and trained with current Michigan swimming coach Mike Bottom prior to the Games -- is talking a different game now.
He doesn't think he (or anyone else) has a chance against Phelps in the last individual race of his Olympic career.
"Phelps is out of our league," Cavic said. "It's not fair that I'm talking for everybody, but I'm expecting something special tomorrow. I think he's going to go 50.5."
LOCAL OLYMPIANS
Michigan junior Connor Jaeger will compete in the prelims of the grueling 1,500-meter freestyle on Friday morning. The top eight from four heats advance to Saturday's final.
When Jaeger finished less than a second behind Andrew Gemmell at the U.S. Olympic trials, it was just the fifth time he had completed a 1,500 race.
Getting on the track
The first day of Olympic track events -- or "athletics" -- is Friday, and both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University will be represented by international competitors.
Eastern Michigan graduate Eric Alejandro, representing Puerto Rico, will run the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries at 6:15 a.m.
Former Wolverine teammates Nick Willis and Nate Brannen will compete in the prelims of the 1,500-meter run at 3:05 p.m. Willis was the flag bearer for his native New Zealand and Brannen competes for his native Canada.
Uhunoma Osazuwa -- a U-M Doctor of Pharmacy student -- competes in the opening events of the heptathlon. She represents Nigeria.
Water polo, take 3
The U.S. women's water polo team plays its third pool play game against China at 2:40 p.m. Betsey Armstrong, Huron High School and University of Michigan graduate, is the team's goalkeeper.
The Americans beat Hungary and tied Spain in its first two matches. Pool play determines seeding for the eight-team, single-elimination medal tournament.
