Intensity and 'Pina Coladas' balance Michigan softball's World Series team

Michigan softball coach Carol “Hutch” Hutchins has her usual look of intensity when standing in the coach’s box along the third base line. But when’s Rupert Holmes' ode to beach bums around the world comes over the loud speaker at Alumni Field, Hutchins can’t help but crack the occasional smile.

“If you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain. If you’re not into yoga, if you have a half a brain.”

It’s the entrance music of senior Ashley Lane. Not exactly the bass bumping, adrenaline pumping music players normally choose to greet them when coming to the plate.

But after the weekend Lane had, more might follow. Game-winning hits - a walk-off home run on Friday, and a two-run double on Saturday - twice followed Lane’s atypical entrance music and catapulted Michigan to a Super Regional championship. Just as her entrance music suggests, Lane seemed oblivious to the pressure of the situations she faced in the Super Regional, and the result was Michigan’s first Women’s College World Series berth since 2009.

“It’s just kind of my personality. I’m just kind of chill and relaxed and I really enjoy the song and I think it fit perfectly with who I am,” Lane said. “Hutch was pretty shocked by it when she first heard it, but she’s grown to like it.”

Hutchins said it took her a while to notice Lane’s entrance music, and when she did she poked fun at her second baseman with a penchant for the dramatic.

It’s not along the lines of what Hutchins would choose for entrance music, but at the same time she’s grown to appreciate how much it fits Lane. For three years the high energy Hutchins worked to light a fire under the laid-back Lane and, as Lane puts it, “we were probably both trying to figure each other out up until this year.”

While their personalities will never be the same, the two have enjoyed a senior year both can appreciate.

“Ashley has always been laid back and I’m an intense coach, no question. I don’t think it always works for her and probably not for me, but I’ve always known Ashley had a ton to give to this program in a leadership role and it’s my job as a coach to push her to it,” Hutchins said. “I spent a lot of years pushing and I think this year has been rewarding I think for both of us.”

Lane enters the World Series leading the No. 8 seeded Wolverines in hits (169) and is second in home runs (18) and RBIs (60), trailing freshman Sierra Romero in both categories.

“If you asked me in February, what is one of the things we need to happen to be successful this year, one of the things I would have said is we need Ashley Lane to have a good year and she has,” Hutchins said.

Along with being remembered as the player with one of the more unique entrance songs and personalities the program has seen, Lane will finish her Michigan career in the top five in home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage. Her clutch performance last weekend further cemented her spot in program history.

But she’s not done.

“To finally get here is a dream come true, but the dream isn’t just to get here, it’s to play well and win here,” Lane said.

Michigan has a tall task in front of it with top-seeded Oklahoma in its opener on Thursday (9:30 p.m., ESPN2) of the double elimination tournament. Oklahoma features two-time USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Keilani Ricketts, who has thrown 16 shutouts this year, including five no-hitters.

“They don’t have any weaknesses that I can speak of. We need to embrace it and I think we are embracing it. Our kids are real excited about the opportunity to be on that stage and play that team,” Hutchins said. “We need to put the ball in play and we need to contain their offense, and then we’ll see.”

True to form, Lane isn’t letting the hype surrounding the heavily favored Sooners change her mentality.

“They’re a great team, but you know what, so are we,” Lane said. “Every team can win on any given day and we just have to come in to each game confident that we can beat our opponent.”

Pitching dilemma

On Tuesday, Hutchins said injured pitcher sophomore pitcher Haylie Wagner is “day-to-day” after straining her pitching shoulder during pregame warm-ups at Saturday’s Super Regional. Wagner was slated to start in the third and deciding game against Louisiana Lafayette but was replaced at the last minute by Sara Driesenga.

Driesenga has started 38 of Michigan’s 61 games, but only has 23 complete games. She struggled against Louisiana Lafayette at the end of Game 1 on Friday and in relief in Game 2 before putting together a gem - allowing one run on four hits and striking out seven - in the deciding game after finding out she would start just minutes before the start.

“(Driesenga) seems to do better when she knows she doesn’t really have a choice. She knew there was no choice (Saturday) and she just pitched her heart out,” Hutchins said. “We’re just going to worry about it one game at a time and control what we can control. That’s all we can do. She’s certainly capable of doing what we need to do out here.”

Pete: your list of games needs some minor correcting. Games 9 and 10 should instead read: Game 9 - Game 6 loser vs. Game 7 winner, 7 p.m. Game 10 - Game 5 loser vs. Game 8 winner, 9:30 p.m.

The discipline of this team has shown itself as a major strength all year.....the Seniors have been the leaders and the rest of the team has followed their desire to work hard one pitch at a time...whether at bat or in the field. Their defensive effort has been outstanding. M has the best coaching staff at the WCWS. And the players all respect that. Go Blue !

Oklahoma will be a challenge. Kailani Ricketts has lost only one game but she did lose a game to Louisville and allowed five runs on eight hits. She has excellent control so Michigan needs to come at her very aggressively. Oklahoma has a powerful offense as well with the lineup having the following batting percentages: 0.401, 0.345, 0.350, 0.333, 0.310, 0.346, 0.350, 0.284, and 0.357. Dreisenga will have to reproduce her most recent pitching effort and the defense will have to be perfect, that is, no errors. On any day U of M softball can be good enough to beat any other team. Let us hope that tonight begins a string of excellent performances of our Lady Wolverines. Go Blue!
