When Friday night began only four Class A boys high school basketball teams remained unbeaten in the state of Michigan. After a 69-57 home win over Chelsea Friday night, Ypsilanti is still one of them.
Just don't tell anyone.
"We're trying to fly under the radar," said Ypsilanti coach Steve Brooks.
With first place in the Southeastern Conference White Division on the line, the Phoenix played a solid first half to take a 35-23 lead heading into the locker room, but Chelsea's Charlie McCalla almost single-handedly shot the Bulldogs back.
After he went scoreless in the first half, McCalla came out blazing in the third quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers in the first 2:15 of the second half. All of a sudden, Chelsea was back in the game.
The Bulldogs tied the game 41-41 in the third quarter but never took the lead. In the fourth quarter, it was Ypsilanti that put on the shooting display.
