The last time the Ypsilanti High School girls basketball team faced Dexter, it fell behind 22-2 after the first quarter in an eventual loss.
The Phoenix learned their lesson.
Ypsilanti jumped out to a 27-12 halftime lead and fended off a late Dexter comeback for a 45-40 Southeastern Conference White Division win Friday in Ypsilanti.
"We really focused on making the right pass instead of trying to go to fast," said Ypsilanti coach Chris Slater, whose team led 10-5 after the first quarter. "We settled ourselves in and were able to get down the court and make a few shots."
Carrying the first-half shooting was Delisia Morris, who made two 3-pointers during the Phoenix's 10-0 run heading into halftime. She scored 10 points in the half on the way to a team-high 15.
"(We were just) swinging the ball, catching it, looking for the shots and being patient," said Morris. "We just came out really hard."
Dexter (13-5, 10-4 SEC White) didn't appear at all prepared for the strong start from Ypsilanti (10-7, 4-6 SEC White).
