Huron boys basketball opens season with 'sloppy' win over Bedford and more Thursday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

With practically every player back from last year’s Class A state runner up team, the 2010-11 season will be one of high expectations for the Huron High School boys basketball team. Those high expectations are why, despite a 66-48 win over Temperance Bedford on Thursday night, Huron coach Waleed Samaha was not pleased over his team’s performance.

It’s not that Samaha expects more than an 18-point win over a tough Southeastern Conference Red Division opponenet. What he expects is for it to come about in a different manner.

Samaha was particularly displeased with his team’s 23 turnovers.

“This is too experienced a team to have first game jitters,” Samaha said. “It was a sloppy game for us all around.”

The turnover-bug wasn’t confined to one or two players, as 12 different players committed turnovers on the night for Huron

Huron’s press more than made up for the errors as the River Rats forced 33 turnovers themselves.

AJ Mathew led Huron (1-0, 1-0 SEC Red) in scoring with 16 points, while Dante Williams scored 12 on 5-of-12 shooting with a 3-pointer. Eight other Huron players scored for Huron, while Jackson Lamb led all scorers with 17 points for Bedford.

“Credit to Bedford, what they did tonight had a lot to do with our problems in the way that they played,” Samaha said.

Huron led 26-18 at half and doubled its lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Kicking Mules 23-17. Huron outrebounded Bedford 32-21 on the night.

Samaha said his team has a lot of work to do before taking on the defending Division II Ohio state champs Dayton Dunbar on Saturday at the Riverdome.

“We know that the execution tonight was not good enough tonight, and was not up to our standard," Samaha said. "It won’t be good enough against Dayton Dunbar on Saturday, or against anyone we play.”
