Watch Chelsea quarterback Scott Crews throw a 30-yard spiral for a touchdown at scrimmage

By Pete Cunningham

The Chelsea High School football team won't look like it has in recent years in 2013. The main difference: without a proven All-State running back in the backfield (see: Berkley Edwards, Nick Hill) much more will be put on the shoulders of the quarterback.

  • Team-by-team glance at Washtenaw County's "other" squads
That quarterback will be senior Scott Crews, a 6-2, 185 pound first-year starter.

Crews patiently waited his turn as a backup last year. But this is his team now and during Thursday's four-way scrimmage with Monroe Jefferson, Lansing Everett and Pinckney, Crews looked up to the challenge.

In Chelsea's first offensive series, Crews threw a perfect 20-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Tim Mantel. Crews threw out of the shotgun with the ball traveling 30 yards in the air and dropping perfectly into Mantel's outstretched hands.

It was just a scrimmage, but Crews was happy to have success against players in different colored jerseys than his own, and to get the chance as the No. 1.

"It feels great," Crews said on Thursday. "Hard work pays off in the summer and when you get your chance you’ve got to shine. It’s been a lot of hard work and I’m ready."

In classic quarterback mode, Crews deflected credit to his wide receiver for the play.

"When you’ve got a big 6-4 wide receiver, you’ve got to take advantage of it," Crews said. "We work on it a lot, so during the season it’s something we’ll probably go to."

30 yards? that's a whole 90 feet? that's almost all MAC...

Not sure if "all MAC" is as insulting as you're intending here considering we're talking about a high school senior. A high school senior QB should be so lucky to look "All Mac" like niu's Jordan lunch, who was an all American as well

Well, Clownfish, I was surprise that student athletes just have to pass their classes and take a minimum of 5/7 classes to play sports. If they dip below the GPA check in Sept., they can still practice, but not participate in the game. And, the classes can be online too. Maybe the bar should be a little higher so these kids can actually attend college vs. just graduate high school. Maybe you should have mandatory study hall time vs. letting the kids practice with the team. Strange philosophy the AAPS school have for kids and sports.

Any video of a young person slamming a math test or doing really, really well on a college entry exam?

Well, not in the sports section, no, but I think you'll find that in our k-12 coverage we highlight the accomplishments of school districts and students regularly.
