Track teams, individuals across Washtenaw County start postseason
Saline High School will have the two highest-ranked teams on its own track when 17 schools from around southeast Michigan gather for an MHSAA Division 1 regional on Friday.
But the Hornets won’t have a monopoly on talent.
A number of Washtenaw County athletes that have posted top 10 state-wide performances this season, as recorded at athletic.net, will begin their state championship hopes in Saline.
Huron High School senior Cindy Ofili enters the meet with the state’s second-best time in the 100 hurdles (14.00 seconds), third in the 300 hurdles (44.76), third in the 100-meter dash (12.19) and eighth in the 200 meters (25.41).
Her River Rat teammate, Maya Long, recorded the best time in the 400 dash this year (55.27 seconds) and the fifth-best time in the 200 (25.28).
They could be challenged for the best all-around performance by Ypsilanti’s Endia Francois, who has the state’s third-best time in the 200 (25.11), fifth-best in the long jump (18-feet, 4-inches) and tenth-best in the 100 (12.44).
With its exceptional depth, the Saline girls team is ranked fifth in the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association power rankings. The Hornets’ Quenee Dale (fourth in 100 hurdles) and Abby Rentschler (sixth in 3,200 run) have each recorded top 10 times this season.
The Saline boys team is ranked No. 2 in the same power rankings and have gotten top 10 performances from Steven Bastien (first in long jump, fifth in pole vault), Garrick Roemer (fourth in 400), Matthew Elms (seventh in 800) and Logan Wetzel (eighth in 1,600).
The Hornets’ four relay teams are also among the best in the state, including the second-best times in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.
While Saline is strongest in the distance relays, Ypsilanti has two of the state’s top sprint relay teams (third in 400, sixth in 800). The Phoenix are led by Austin Sanders, who has the state’s sixth-best time in the 300 hurdles and the 10th-best time in the 100 dash.
Other local athletes to watch at the meet include Pioneer’s Drake Johnson (second in 110 hurdles, sixth in 300 hurdles) and Lincoln’s Rare Williams (ninth in 300 hurdles) and Tyree Waller (third in long jump).
The meet starts with field events at noon. Running preliminaries are scheduled for 2 p.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
The top two finishers in each event, as well as individuals that meet standards set by the MHSAA, advance to the state finals.
