Track regional champions Aaron Richmond of Willow Run and Maya Long of Huron
This week's Athletes to Know, Willow Run's Aaron Richmond and Huron's Maya Long, were both champions in multiple events at last week's MHSAA track and field regionals.
Long not only won the 400-meter dash at last Friday's Division 1 meet at Saline, she ran the fastest time in the state across all divisions. Richmond was signing a football letter of intent at the beginning of the week, and winning races by the end.
Class: Junior.
Sport: Track and field.
Accomplishment: Long ran a leg on Huron’s Division 1 regional championship 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams and also finished first in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, both of which she came from behind down the final stretch to win. Her time of 54.8 seconds in the 400 was nearly two seconds faster than the personal best she had set just one week earlier at the River Rat Invitational and was the fastest 400 time at any regional across all divisions in the state. Huron won the team title.
Favorite music: Pop. Long says she likes practically anything that’s playing on the radio.
Down the road: Long hopes to run track in college at Michigan, Penn State or Tennessee.
Back in the day: Growing up, Long always wanted to be a pro soccer player. She says she still enjoys the game, and cheers for whoever is winning.
Coach Keri Kirk says: “Maya has been working under the radar for a very long time. She’s been very good, for very long and people didn’t know who she was. I think now people know who Maya Long is.”
Class: Senior.
Sport: Track and field.
Accomplishment: After working with tutors, Richmond was able to raise his ACT score by four points and then signed a letter of intent to join Eastern Michigan’s football team as a preferred walk-on early last week. On Friday, Richmond won the 100-meter dash at the Division 3 regional championships and ran the anchor leg on the Flyers’ first place 400-meter relay team.
Next year: Will play football at Eastern Michigan. Plans to major in communications and business.
Favorite music: Rap. Richmond enjoys listening to artists Lil’ Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Trae da Truth and Rick Ross among others.
Free time: “In my free time, I’ll hang with friends, maybe go on a date with a female and lift weights. My little brother plays AAU basketball, so I go to his games a lot, too,” Richmond said.
Coach Kendall Williams says: “He has always been an outstanding athlete. It seems like the higher the stakes are, the higher he’ll raise his performance.”
