Saline swimming claims first, Huron second at Huron Relays; Pioneer, Huron and Skyline soccer win and more

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Saline High School girls swimming team, the reigning Division 1 state champs, picked up right where it left off Thursday at the Huron Relays.

The Hornets took first place with 490 points in the eight-team field, while host Huron followed in second place with 364.

Dexter finished third (356), while Ann Arbor Pioneer and Ann Arbor Skyline tied for sixth (296) along with Brighton.

"It was a good meet and a good night for us. A great start to the season," said Saline coach Todd Brunty, whose team won four events and took runner-ups in three. "We tried some different things tonight. Some worked, some didn't."

Working for Saline were relays like the 200-yard freestyle (Melanie Schroeder, Nicole Ozminkowski, Nikki Flynn, Jordan Rucinski), where the Hornets combined for a winning time of 8 minutes, 9.03 seconds.

Although the Huron Relays are structured, naturally, in an all-relay format, Brunty feels the season-opener is a good measuring stick for Southeastern Conference competition.

"This type of meet is actually a good barometer for a dual meet," noted Brunty. "We definitely have some work to do; our league meet is going to be very competitive."

Huron registered a win in the 100 backstroke (1:50.66) and Skyline nabbed the 100 breaststroke (2:09.41).

Pioneer's best showing was a second-place finish in diving. Meanwhile, Dexter nabbed third in 200 IM relay.
