Skyline wide receiver Jordan Woods chooses Purdue, leads top performers and more high school notes
Days after making a verbal commitment to attend Purdue University, Skyline High School wide receiver Jordan Woods had the top performance of any wide receiver in Washtenaw County so far this year in terms of yards (198) and touchdowns (3).
Maybe he should choose a college every week?
Read more about Woods' college commitment, AnnArbor.com's team power rankings and more in the midweek football fix below.
Born to be a Boilermaker
Some have suggested to Woods that the decision may have contributed to his play, but he’s not buying it.
“Everyone’s just told me, ‘oh it’s good to know and all this other stuff, but for me, it doesn’t really change the mindset of how I approach everything,” Woods said.
Skyline coach Rod Jones didn’t think Woods was playing tentatively before the decision, but admitted he’s glad the decision is out of the way.
“If you’re always thinking, 'I gotta work for a scholarship, I gotta work for a scholarship' and try not to get hurt, you don’t play all out,” Jones said. “Now that that’s behind him, he can probably move on and be the guy he’s been for us.”

As a junior, Woods caught 65 passes for 1,103 yards and 10 touchdowns and was honorable mention on the Associated Press Division 1-2 All-State team.
Eastern Michigan was the first college to offer him a scholarship and Toledo followed suit. Purdue was the first Big Ten school to make him an offer.
“They were the first ones there, and it seemed like they wanted me,” said Woods, who also said he liked that West Lafayette is close enough for his parents to come watch him play, but far enough away that he can do his own thing.
“I believe he can be a big-time player and he needed to be at a big-time school,” Jones said. “He’s worked hard, he’s an outstanding player, and Purdue’s a great university.”
Loss deja vu
Saturday was supposed to be a day of recovery for Milan High School coach Jesse Hoskins.
Milan lost to New Boston Huron 26-21 the night before on a go-ahead touchdown with two seconds remaining on the clock. This was after Milan had taken its first lead of the game on a two-point conversion with 58 seconds left.
To relax on Saturday, Hoskins -- who grew up a Notre Dame fan -- decided to watch the Notre Dame versus Michigan game on Saturday with Milan basketball coach Josh Tropea. He basically relived his pain from the night before as Michigan won in eerily similar fashion.
“It got to a point where we were like, ‘you serious, can we go through this again?’” Hoskins said.
Of course watching his favorite childhood team wasn’t nearly as tough as experiencing it for himself. Plus, Hoskins -- in his first year as head coach -- said he was happy to see first-year Michigan coach Brady Hoke get the win.
“I draw some comparisons and can appreciate what he’s trying to do,” Hoskins said. “Taking over a traditionally strong program, maybe not as much talent as you’re used to, trying to build a new foundation, but maintain tradition.”
Hoskins also didn’t mind seeing Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly lose. Kelly was head coach at Grand Valley State when Hoskins was a quarterback at GLIAC rival Hillsdale College from 2001-05. Hillsdale was 0-5 against GVSU in Hoskins’ tenure and 0-3 against Kelly.
Momentum swings
Father Gabriel Richard suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday to its biggest Detroit Catholic High School League rival, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. Though the game ended up a 48-22 blowout, late in the second quarter, it was still close.
Trailing 14-7, Gabriel Richard tied the score after a Nick Pauze touchdown with three minutes to go until halftime. Notre Dame returned the kickoff for a touchdown that Gabriel Richard coach Brian Lemons said was the beginning of the end.
“We never really got into the mental state we needed to after that,” Lemons said.
Notre Dame Prep had a red-zone interception and a pick-six in the second half that left Gabriel Richard reeling.
“It was a perfect formula against a young team like us, get us behind, and get us chasing our tail,” Lemons said. “When we needed to most we couldn’t muster up the maturity we needed.”
