EAST LANSING -- Saline fared the best out of the four Washtenaw County high school girls golf teams present at the East Lansing Invitational at Walnut Hills Country Club on Monday, but it was far from the Hornets' strongest showing.

In the 24-team field -- 12 of which are ranked in the top 10 of their respective divisions -- Saline shot a 350 to take fourth place behind Lansing Catholic Central (322), Grosse Ile (333) and Flint Powers Catholic (349). Shannon Fraser led the Hornets, finishing in sixth place after shooting an 8-over-par 80.

"It was not one of our better days," said Saline coach Betsy French. "It's not too tough of a course, but if you're off a little bit you can certainly find trouble. A lot of our girls had bad putting days and we got in some bunker trouble."

Saline's Karla Gross looked poised for the medal stand after shooting a 38 on the front nine, but finished with an 84 and just outside of the top 10.

"I hope this is a a wake up call that we still have a lot of work to do and need everybody hitting on all cylinders," French said.

Chelsea's Gabby Triveline took seventh place after shooting an 81, as the Bulldogs (392) finished 15th as a team. Pioneer (390) finished in 14th place with its low score coming from Sloane Supica, who shot a 92.

"The kids' endurance is up now. The hills alone on the front side of (University of Michigan Golf Course) gets our players in shape to play 18," said Pioneer coach Steve Rodriguez. "The most difficult part is when you combine the physical part with the mental aspect of having to be on."

Dexter (392) finished in 17th place and was paced by Jessie Schlanderer's 93.

"The girls played pretty well today. I thought they handled the greens pretty well," said Dexter coach Fred Ligrow. "We just had too many train wreck holes."

Grosse Ile's Molly Esordi shot a 75 for individual medalist honors.
