Saline golfers lead by five strokes after first round of Division 1 state finals
The Saline High School girls golf team set a goal at the beginning of the year to better its state runner up finish from last season. With the first round of the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti in the books, the Hornets are in prime position to do exactly that, leading the field by five strokes with a team score of 330.
Top-ranked Rochester Hills Stoney Creek is in second place (335), with Holt (340) in third.
“I’m pleased with this first day, but we’ve got a whole ‘nother day to go,” said Saline coach Betsy French. “I’m pleased they got themselves in position.”
Seniors Karla Gross and Shannon Fraser put themselves in position individually. Gross shot a six-over-par 78 and is just one stroke off of the lead behind four other golfers. Despite a three-putt on her final hole, Fraser is in a six-way tie for sixth and just three strokes off the lead after shooting an 80.
Saline freshman Emily White sank a 40-foot birdie putt on her final hole and is in a four-way tie for 14th after shooting an 83. Kristen Areddy rounded out Saline’s scorers with an 89.
