Results from Day 1 of the 52nd annual Washtenaw Interclub Swim Conference championships

By Pete Cunningham

This story was updated to include additional multiple event winners.

The 52nd annual Washtenaw Interclub Swim Conference championships kicked off on Monday, and some familiar names from the high school season took home a fair share of medals when swimmers age 13-and-up competed at Skyline High School.

Comfortable in the confines of her home pool, Ashleigh Shanley -- who was a state champion in the 100-yard breaststroke for Skyline in the fall -- won the 50 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and was on the first-place 200 medley relay team. Shanley also took fourth place in the 50 backstroke, competing for Huron Valley Swim Club in the 15-17-year-old age group.

Saline High School junior-to-be Kate Rogers won three individual races, sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races for Travis Pointe Country Club. Rogers was also part of Travis Pointe's second-place 200 medley relay team.

No one had as dominant of a day as Shanley and Rogers in the 15-17 division of the boys competition, though there were a few with a pair of first-place finishes.

Saline All-Stater Josh Ehrman took home two firsts (50 breaststroke, 200 IM) for Chippewa Club, as did fellow Hornets swimmer Michael Bundas (50 free, 50 butterfly) for Travis Pointe.

Max Cornblath (50 backstroke, 200 freestyle relay), Chris Klein (100 freestyle, 200 medley relay) and Dennis Dahlmann (200 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay) all won two events for Huron Valley. Cornblath and Klein swim for Pioneer High School during the school season while Dahlman swims for Skyline.

In the 13-14 age group, Chippewa Club's Jacob Ehrman (100 and 200 free) and Georgetown Country Club's Kai Williams (50 butterfly, 100 free) each won two individual boys events. Travis Pointe's Amelia Armstrong-Grant won the 100 free and 200 IM girls' races.

The diving competition also began on Monday, with the 8-and-under boys and girls competing at Chelsea High School, with Racquet Club’s Alec Simon and Dexter Community Aquatic Club’s Lauren Witte taking home first-place honors.

Team scores were not provided yet, and that may be because diving results were not available until very late Monday night. Team scores will be posted as soon as they become available.
