Reflecting on the high school basketball season so far

By Pete Cunningham

Last week was officially my worst high school basketball prediction performance (7-3), and the worst readers (6-3-1) who played along with our polls. In light of such horrific prognostication, I have been doing a lot of reflection and soul searching.

That resulted in my recollection of what has been a very entertaining basketball season so far. Certain moments throughout the season stand out, so I thought I’d share a couple with you a week before the conference races are decided and we get knee deep in the playoffs.

Biggest ‘Wow’ Moment: Pioneer’s James Kelly dunk versus Father Gabriel Richard.

I have written extensively about the athletic exploits of Kelly in this very column, but nothing I have ever seen in a high school game was close to as spectacular as the dunk he threw down against Gabriel Richard on Dec. 23 at the old St. Thomas gym.

Jimmy Holman led a two-on-one fast break with Kelly trailing and acted as though he was going take the layup himself, which drew the Gabriel Richard defender. Holman banked a pass off of the glass, ala an And One mix-tape, and Kelly rose up, caught the pass and slammed it home.

It was such an awesome display that half of the rabid Gabriel Richard wanted to cheer, but instead just stood in awed silence. Their Pioneer counterparts showed no such restraint.

Best Student Section Cheer: Pioneer’s “Jesus was a Pioneer.”

The Pioneer student section gets bonus points for creativity.

During the same game, Pioneer’s student section had perhaps the best parochial vs. public school cheer ever, chanting “Jesus was a Pioneer” and holding up a sign depicting God’s only son rocking a purple baseball cap.

Later in the game, one of the most vocal students in the Pioneer section took a spill on the court while returning from the concession stand.

Divine intervention? Karma?

Most Gut Wrenching Moments: Dexter boys (runner up: Milan girls).

The Dexter boys have lost four games in overtime, the latest of which they were called for an offensive foul on what would have been a game-winning layup. One week earlier, the Dreadnaughts lost in double OT to Skyline and Dexter coach Randy Swoverland was literally speechless.

Swoverland has said he’s going to write a book about this season. My suggestion for a working title: “Seriously?” Whether it ends up being a comedy or tragedy remains to be seen.

The Milan girls get a runner-up nod for losing one-point contests two weeks in a row after being called for intentional fouls at the end of the game while attempting to send the other team to the line.

Seriously, ref?

Best Prediction: Dexter vs. Chelsea, girls rematch.

My exact prediction: “Chelsea won on its home court by six the first time around. So ask yourself, is home court advantage worth six points? I say yes. Dexter, 45-44.”

Dexter won 47-45. (Hold for applause)

As for my worst prediction, I like to have a short-memory about such things, but feel free to remind me by joining the conversation at AnnArbor.com.

The memorable moments in my mind are, of course, limited to my own shoddy memory and the limited number of games I’m able to attend. If there are other moments you’d like to share, you can do so below.

Now, for this week’s picks. Games are all scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

BOYS GAMES

Skyline at Saline: Saline is playing its kind of basketball right now - winning three of its last four - which was far from the case when the Eagles defeated the Hornets by 13 in January. Skyline isn’t necessarily slumping though, winning four of its last five, including wins over Chelsea, Dexter and Pioneer. Saline, 52-49.

Pioneer at Monroe: The Pioneers have been very up-and-down this year, a distinction Monroe would happily trade for at this point in the season. Pioneer, 85-65.

Bedford at Huron: Huron seems like an unstoppable force, having won 12 straight with seemingly a different player stepping up every game. Bedford, however, is very much a one-man show and heavily dependent on super sophomore Jackson Lamb. He isn’t good enough to take on Huron’s lion’s den of a frontcourt by himself. Huron, 72-58.

Ypsilanti at Dexter: The last time these teams met, Ypsilanti prevailed in overtime, just three days after the Dreadnaughts had lost in overtime to Huron. Dexter has lost two of its last three games in OT in a season where the gut-punches seem to be never-ending. Ypsilanti, 59-54.

Milan at Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central: This game will decide the Huron League championship. The Big Reds took down the Falcons at home earlier in the year, but my feeling is the home-court advantage could play a big role in this one. St. Mary, 49-48.

GIRLS GAMES

Saline at Skyline: Skyline’s 44-40 loss to Lincoln on Friday was by far both the Eagles’ most productive night offensively and its lowest point differential of the season. Will the progress translate to a win at home against a Saline team which has lost seven of its last eight? Saline, 60-29.

Huron at Bedford: Bedford is no easy place to play on a Friday night, but something tells me Steve Vinson will remind his players that Bedford handed them their only league loss of the season at the Riverdome, which should provide plenty of motivation. Huron, 55-37.

Monroe at Pioneer: If Maya Richmond plays the way she did against Chelsea on Tuesday - guarding guards, posting up centers and driving past forwards - she and Kamilah Carter could be the most dangerous 1-2 punch in the area. Pioneer, 61-46.

Dexter at Ypsilanti: Dexter has a slight edge both athletically and in the experience department, but don’t count Ypsilanti out, especially with the way Jasmine Jones -- 17.3 point average in the Phoenix’s past four games - has played of late. Dexter, 51-49.

Adrian Madison at Whitmore Lake: The “Trojan War” went worse for Whitmore Lake - a 62-13 loss on Jan. 13 - the first time around than it did for Hector in the Iliad. Madison, 55-25.

Season record: Pete’s picks: 54-18 (.750); Readers: 54-16-2 (.750). Last Week: Pete’s picks: 7-3 (.700) Readers: 6-3-1 (.600).

Your worst prediction had to be when you had Huron winning by 7 against skyline they were up 35 at halftime and their core group of guys did not play 2nd half at all it seems like Huron despite their success is constantly being disrespected in the area. Nobody in the area has taken the them into 4th quarter without being down 20

What about Central Academy? Yes they are a Class D school but they play some pretty good ball for such a small school. Their team plays really well together and can possibly make some noise in the state tournament. Check them out I'm sure you will be surprised.
