Pioneer shortstop Travis Maezes and Milan soccer player Kelly Copeland

This week's Athletes to Know features Milan senior soccer player Kelly Copeland and Pioneer junior shortstop Travis Maezes.

TRAVIS MAEZES

Travis Maezes

School: Pioneer.

Class: Junior.

Sport: Baseball.

Accomplishment: Maezes went 4-for-6 with four RBIs, two walks and two runs scored in a doubleheader against Father Gabriel Richard on Saturday. After Pioneer lost the opener, 10-7, Maezes broke open the nightcap with a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. Pioneer would win the contest, 7-0.

Favorite music: Hip hop, especially Wiz Khalifa.

Maezes and Blue: Though just a junior, Maezes has already verbally committed to play baseball at the University of Michigan.

Favorite athlete: Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley.

Favorite class: Chemistry.

Coach Jerry Holley says: “He showed what he can do when you make a mistake inside. He’s been hitting the ball really well all year.”


KELLY COPELAND

Kelly Copeland

School: Milan.

Class: Senior.

Sport: Soccer.

Accomplishment: Scored two goals in a 3-0 win over New Boston Huron in the opening round of districts at Milan High School on Tuesday. The Big Reds advance to play Dexter in the semifinal round of their Division 2 district at Dexter High School on Thurday.

Favorite music: 3OH!3.

Next year: Will attend Lawrence Tech University with the hopes of majoring in biomechanical engineering and will play soccer in the program’s inaugural season.

Favorite athlete: Deceased distance runner Steve Prefontaine.

Favorite class: AP Calculus.

Giving back: In addition to playing soccer, Copeland coaches a U-10 team for the Milan Youth Soccer Club.
