Pioneer girls lacrosse team's season ends in state semifinal; Gabriel Richard falls in girls soccer

The same school has never played in the MHSAA boys and girls lacrosse championship games in the same season.

Pioneer High School had a chance to become the first, but a 16-11 loss to Hartland by the girls team on Wednesday night left the Pioneers one win shy of the perfecta.

Samantha Zwolan had three goals and four assists for the Pioneers, who were unable to overcome a 10-5 halftime lead during the Division 1 state semifinal at South Lyon High School. Sophie Buchmueller added three goals.

"We got behind early," Pioneer coach Zachary Maghes said. "We just couldn't make it up."

Pioneer (14-9-1) closed the gap to three goals with four minutes left in play before Hartland (19-4-1) scored the final two goals to secure its trip to the state finals against Birmingham United. (Boxscore | Division 1 bracket)

In nearby Howell, the Pioneer boys team was clinching its first trip to the state finals. The girls team -- which has reached the title game twice since the NCAA started sponsoring the sport in 2005 -- fell short of its goal.

"Our goal was to win the state title at the start of the year," Maghes said."We didn't finish the way we'd have liked, but overall, I'm happy. We've won back-to-back regional titles, and we'll be back next year to make another run at it."

Father Gabriel Richard loses in D3 soccer regional

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep's Jennifer Kiel scored off a free kick with 12 minutes left to play to beat Father Gabriel Richard, 2-1, in a Division 3 regional semifinal Wednesday at Detroit Country Day High School.

The Catholic High School League rivals had split a pair of one-goal regular season games.

"Obviously, we knew it was going to be a tight game and ... be decided by little plays. That ultimately is what happened," Gabriel Richard coach Matt Carroll said. "It was a great game of soccer to watch. Unfortunately, we came out on short end."

Mary Yocum scored late in the first half for the Fighting Irish and the game was tied 1-1 at halftime. (Full story | Boxscore | Division 3 bracket)

"I told girls we were right where we want to be after 40 minutes," Caroll said. "We battled."
