Pioneer boys hockey team comes up short in regional final, falls 4-3 in OT to Livonia Churchill

By Kaleb Roedel

The Pioneer High School boys hockey team took the ice for Saturday's Division 1 regional final against a Livonia Churchill squad who had yet to allow a goal this postseason, outscoring the opposition 15-0.

But three periods later, there the Pioneers were, tied with the Chargers, 3-3, in overtime.

Minutes into the extra session, however, Pioneer saw the puck take an unfortunate bounce. With 6 minutes, 47 seconds left in overtime, the Chargers unleashed a shot that ricocheted off the back wall and found the stick of Jake Otto, who was camped in front of the net.

Otto slapped in the game-winner before Pioneer goalie Spencer Peck was able to get into blocking-position, ending Pioneer’s season with a 4-3 regional final loss at its own Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

“That last goal … that thing bounces off the back wall and comes out and there’s nothing Spencer (Peck) did wrong on the play,” said Pioneer coach Steven Armstrong. “There’s very little anyone did wrong on the play.

“You do that play 100 times and that kid (Otto) may not corral it. You take your hat off to that kid, he made a great play.”
