With a minute and a half left in the first quarter against Dexter on Tuesday night, Pioneer High School point guard Jimmy Holman rushed the ball up court, stopped on a dime, and popped a 3-pointer. Moments later, Holman calmly dribbled around a high-screen and buried a jumper.
The junior guard was putting on a shooting display for which Dexter had no answer as he put up 13 points - almost twice his 7.2 point average - leading Pioneer to a 51-46 Southeastern Conference win over Dexter in Ann Arbor.
"It was a big confidence builder for me; if I hit a shot early it helps me build a lot of confidence throughout the game," said Holman, who scored 13 points. "If shots needed to be made, luckily enough I was able to do that."
And Dexter's defense gave Holman openings to unleash his outside touch.
"The way they were going underneath the ball screen, what that creates is you got to hit that mid-range jumper," said Pioneer coach Rex Stanczak, whose team led 17-15 after the first quarter. "It's just a matter of our guys reacting to what they see. And I thought Jimmy stepped up and did a great job with it, and he's a great mid-range shooter, so they went down."
Pioneer (13-4, 10-3 SEC Red) and Dexter (6-11, 5-8 SEC White) nearly traded baskets all first half until Pioneer built its largest lead, 31-23, with 1 minute, 23 seconds left on consecutive layups from Holman and James Kelly. Kelly chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Anthony Hugan added 13 for the Pioneers.
Carrying the first-half load for the Dreadnaughts was guard Matt Muchmore, who had 12 of his team's 25 points at half. He finished with a game-high 17.
