On Wednesday, the Greenhills School boys soccer team will take on Hamtramck Frontier in the Division 4 state semifinals at Troy Athens High School.

It’s familiar territory for the Greenhills program making its third consecutive semifinals appearance. Unlike its previous two trips to the semifinals, however, Greenhills doesn’t have the luxury of two superstars to rely on for instant goal-production.

Minus Division 1 talents Rob Dolot and Peter Jacobson, this year’s Greenhills squad has been the embodiment of a team-first squad.

“This year we really have to play as a team every game and everyone has to be on their game and playing as hard as they can for the whole game for us to be successful,” said Greenhills midfielder Al Braun, a first-team All-State selection in his own right. But even Braun knows he can’t be expected to do the things Dolot and Jacobson did.

“We have a lot more possession going and we have to use every single player on the field rather than have like one or two players we can rely on,” Braun said. “When times get down, like when we were down (against Lansing Christian in the regional finals) it’s got to be everyone to pull through.”

Last year’s team - which lost in overtime of the state championship game - could afford to have an off-night because Jacobson was good enough to pick up that slack. Jacobson scored 58 goals last season, the eighth most in MHSAA history, and is now playing at Yale University. Dolot - currently playing for Duke University - wasn’t a bad safety net himself with 32 assists and 23 goals himself.

Despite graduating 81 goals between two players, Greenhills has managed to maintain a high level of play, compiling a 17-6 record and never dropping out of the top-10 of the state rankings.

“We’re a real team, it’s not about one or two players it’s about all 11 guys on the field plus the guys coming off the bench,” said Greenhills forward Patrick Duggan. Everybody’s working hard keeping their heads up and working hard.

“Last year, we kind of knew we could get the ball to Pete or Rob and they would make something happen. Now we’ve all got to be on our game.”

Greenhills will take on Hamtramck Frontier on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Troy Athens High School.
