Milan girls basketball headed home for Class B regional
Naturally, when it came time to score the winning points in the school's first district title since 1996, those points weren't going to come easy.
It didn't. With the score tied, senior Allie McAfee picked up a loose ball as Ida was setting up for a potential game-winning play and fed it to Sam Harmon near midcourt.
Harmon, a forward, played the part of point guard and dribbled all the way before making a difficult, contested, lefthanded layup with 2 seconds to play in Milan's 64-62 victory in the Class B district championship game at Father Gabriel Richard High School on Friday night.
Milan will play on its home court at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a regional semifinal against No. 3-ranked Portland (21-1). Linden and Jackson Northwest play in the 5:30 p.m. semifinal. The championship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
"They practically gave it to me. 'Here's this ball, take it from me. You should win,'" said McAfee, describing her end of the game-winning play. "I saw an opportunity and I took it."
