Moments into the MHSAA Class C regional semifinal volleyball match between Manchester and Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, the makings of a blowout were taking shape. The Flying Dutch stormed out to a 10-3 lead on the No.1 team in Class C, forcing SMCC to take a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, the blowout was on. But it wasn’t what Manchester had in mind.

“Going into a game like SMCC that has a history of being so talented, it takes a lot of energy and momentum to stay in that game,” said Manchester head coach Sarah Andrews. “As SMCC chipped away at us, you could see them playing down a little bit instead of going out and being aggressive like they were in those first few points.”

SMCC would go on to win the next seven points to tie up the first set and eventually took the first set 25-20.

From there it was all downhill for the Lady Dutch as SMCC cruised to a 25-9 win in the second set, before closing it out 25-17 in final set at Clinton High School.

“That second game took a lot of wind out of our sails. It was more things that we were doing. Errors on our side,” Andrews said. ”SMCC did a really good job of capitalizing on us when we were down.”

Seniors Loni Rickelmann and McKenna Erkfritz led the Dutch with 25 and 27 kills respectively.

Sophomore Maddie Collins said the size of SMCC really gave the team trouble.

“We just kept hitting at them and that was our really strong point this season, but when we get to these bigger schools that have bigger hitters, our hits just didn’t work for us,” Collins said. “We had a great season, being a senior team, our seniors really strived and we just used that aspect in all of our games.

Manchester ends the season with 50 wins, the most in program history, something Andrews says her team should be proud of.

“To have 50 wins, three losses and three splits in a season is amazing,” Andrews said. “This season was phenomenal, these girls worked so hard for the wins that they got. It’s hard to reflect on right now but I’m proud of them.”

After winning a district title last week, the Whitmore Lake Trojans saw their season come to an end in straight sets Tuesday night losing 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 to Riverview Gabriel Richard in the late Class C semifinal at Clinton High School.

While the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it, head coach Susan Anderson thought the Trojans should have won the match.

“We didn’t hit well like we have, feet didn’t move, there’s more things that they didn’t do well, than things they did well,” Anderson said. “This team was beatable. If we were on our game, they were beatable.

“I just don’t think that we came to play.”

The only lead the Trojans had all evening came at the start of the third set when Riverview was penalized a point for a lineup mistake giving Whitmore Lake a 1-0 lead.

Riverview committed 33 errors on the night, attributing for the majority of Whitmore Lake’s points on the night.

Alex Storey paced the Trojans with five aces.

Despite the poor performance, Anderson, a first year coach thinks there is a bright future for her team.

“The district championship was awesome. I’m a new coach, they’re trying to learn my ways, I’m trying to learn who they are,” Anderson said. “The last three weeks they’ve really started to come together as a team. I’m looking forward to seeing them continuing to improve, I’m only losing two kids.”

The winningest Huron volleyball team in school history walked off the court Tuesday night in Brighton knowing they left nothing on the table.

The River Rats lost a down to the wire 3-2 regional semifinal match to Northville, 21-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-13,15-12 at Brighton High School Tuesday night, ending a season that saw the team record its most regular season wins, 47, and win the school’s first district title since 1993.

“I think if we play tomorrow night and do the exact same thing, I think we probably win,” Huron coach Toney Cummer said. “I think anytime we play that team, that’s what you will get from us.”

Chelsea's Bailey Darwin had 10 kills and three blocks as Chelsea won in straight sets 25-18, 25-23, 25-13 to advance to a regional final.

"I thought, in the first set, we came out strong," Chelsea coach Laura Cleveland said. "I was pleased with how we were attacking the ball. We hadn't seen Eaton Rapids so it took us some time (to figure their strategy out)."
