Local individuals fare well at Division 4 state tennis finals
KALAMAZOO - Two locals made it to the second day of competition at the Division 4 state tennis finals and both made it to the title match.
At No. 1 singles, second-seeded Kelsey Geppner of Father Gabriel Richard High School lost in the finals to top seed and returning No. 2 singles state champion Kathleen Hawkins of Kalamzaoo Hackett 6-0, 6-2.
Meanwhile, at No. 4 doubles, Greenhills' duo of Miriam Akervall and Rae Schueller, the No. 2 seed, beat the top seed Brie Stiefel and Steph Landheer from Grand Rapids South Christian 6-4, 7-5 to win the state title.

Schueller and Stiefel beat Devyn Porath and Teresa Haunert of Riverview Gabriel Richard 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the semis.
Geppner beat Tiffany Ash of Williamston 6-1, 6-3 to get to the finals.
"She had a phenomenal tournament all the way around," Irish coach Jim Sayed said. "She did all that you can ask in the final and just came up short. It was really a great showing for everybody today. A team goal was to finish top ten in the state and we did that."
Geppner, who finished the year 19-3, will be playing tennis at Dennison University next year.
"It's not over for me," she said. "I have a lot of tennis ahead of me this summer."
The Irish finished eighth as a team with 12 points. Greenhills was seventh with 13.
