Ex-Pioneer football coach Jeremy Gold accepts job in Chicago

The position of head varsity football coach at Pioneer High School was posted on the school district's job openings page this week and, on Thursday, the SouthtownStar reported that former Pioneers coach Jeremy Gold has taken over the program at Morgan Park High School in Chicago.
The circumstances surrounding Gold's departure from Pioneer are still unclear.
When asked about rumors of a football coaching opening earlier this month, Pioneer athletic director Lorin Cartwright would not comment directly, stating in an e-mail, "you can watch the Ann Arbor Public Schools employment website. If there is an opening for football coaches it will be found there."
On Thursday, Cartwright said that she would not comment on personnel matters.
Gold did not return several calls or e-mails in response to the rumor, the job posting or to comment on his new position.
Gold has been the head coach at Pioneer since 2007 and compiled a 23-17 record and made three consecutive Division 1 state playoff appearancess. Prior to Pioneer, Gold was a position coach at Northern Iowa, Grand Valley State and Wayne State.
“(Gold) has great experience on both the collegiate and high school levels as a coach and mentor,” Morgan Park principal Beryl Shingles told the Southtown Star. “The (selection) committee was very impressed and we feel he is capable of getting us to the next level that we are striving to achieve.”
Gold told the paper: “I am very much aware from days as a recruiter of the enormous talent in the Chicago Public League and Morgan Park in particular."

Pioneer just made a huge mistake! i played under coach gold for two years and if it were not for him i wouldnt be playing football in college right now. Coach gold cared more than any coach i have ever met. The problem is that there are kids who are too insecure to take hard coaching and run home and tell mommy when someone saids a swear word to them. Coach gold coach hard but he always did it to get the most out of his players and make them better on and off the field. This is high school football not pee wee tee-ball. Dont fire a coach because he cares about winning and pushing kids to their maximums.

I played one year of football for Pioneer during Gold's tenure. I always loathed how he cared more about winning rather that the team. That's the way I always saw it. I could go on about negatives but I'm going to hold back. I wish him all the best though.

For those of us who had our sons go through this program in the last 4 years, the only thing unclear about this departure is why it took so long. The silence of the principal parties speaks volumes. It's a shame AnnArbor.com did not pursue the story past a cryptic comment from the AD, and unreturned phone calls from the Coach himself. There is a LOT more to this story, and the gist has been captured by other commenters here. Thankfully and finally, Pioneer football can turn the page on this era. Quick memo to Principal Shingles: We were all very impressed too, 4 years ago. I honestly hope your experience will be better, but Caveat Emptor.

I sure hope the next coach has a lot less ego and shows more class. Meet JG a couple times very unimpressed and couldn't seem to get away from himself. Pi Hi needs a better coach than what they had, not good with the kids at all. Lets start the moving fund now so he can leave here shortly. Beware Morgan Park for the ego you are about to get!

Interesting how the Ann Arbor press hasn't exercised their right to the Freedom of Information Act to report on why Coach Gold sought a job elsewhere.

This couldn't have happened to a better community of players, families, alumni and fans. To all of the graduated players, sorry it took 4 years of complaints for the administration to do the right by you and the football program, and that your high school football experience was less than stellar. Current players and families, good luck. To all of the players, coaches, sponsors, fans and alumni who have left the program, come on back. Your support is needed. Go Pioneers.

Let get the community back involved!!! Whoever the new coach is will have a stronger parent following then before!!! We are looking for the old school days of having fun, learning to work together, being willing to do anything for your COACH because the KIDS think he is a good guy. Us parents need to repair some of the broken football relationships with our kids. Win or lose we should be proud of Pioneers again!!!!!!!
