Saline won a district title and recorded 10 wins for the first time in school history last season with the help of their head coach’s son, Tyler Palka, at quarterback.

Palka, now at Saginaw Valley State, won AnnArbor.com’s Player of the Year award after throwing for more than 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns during the regular season.

The Hornets have a pair of juniors competing for the starting quarterback spot in fall camp, according to head coach Joe Palka, in Trent Theisen and Travis Brown.

“It’s a great competition so far,” Palka said Monday before the team’s first official practice.

Theisen is the son of Scott Theisen, Saline’s baseball coach and an assistant football coach. He spent last year as Tyler Palka’s backup. That means he skipped junior varsity, something Joe Palka admits is “a little bit of a hindrance for him.”

Brown, meanwhile, saw time on the varsity primarily as a cornerback, but has a “quarterback pedigree,” according to Palka.

On the Hornets’ first day of practice Monday, both were rotating in and out of the quarterback spot, and often displayed their different styles.

“Travis may be thought of as a little more of a runner, Trent may be thought of as a little more of a passer,” Palka said. “But I think both have shown through the course of the summer that they can do both things equally well.”
