Cindy Ofili is not interested in simply becoming a state champion hurdler for her Huron High School girls track team. Instead, Ofili has a bigger goal in mind.

“I definitely want to get under 13.6 (seconds) so I can get the state record,” Ofili said of the 100-meter hurdles event. She came close to breaking that record when she tied former Pioneer High School runner Candice Davis’ nine-year-old record time of 13.66 seconds at a Division 1 regional held at Saline High School Friday.

After tying the record, Ofili thinks she can still be better.

“I’m a lot stronger than I’ve ever been in my whole life," she said. "I’m really happy with the way I ran.”

Along with the 100 hurdles title, Ofili also won the 100 dash, the 300 hurdles and was part of the River Rats' winning 800 relay relay team.

Huron finished third in the final girls standings with 102.33 points. Saline won the event with 187.33 points, followed by Pioneer with 133 points.

The Hornets got a pair of first-place finishes from Randi Bennett (discus and shot put). Abby Rentschler won the 3,200 run and the Hornets won the 3,200 relay.

Sherry Wan (pole vault) and Katie Hoevet (1,600 run) had individual wins for second-place Pioneer.

It was a clean sweep for the host team when the Saline boys team also took first place.

Led by regional championship performances from Logan Wetzel (1,600 run), Steven Bastien (long jump), Matthew Elms (800 run), Nick Renberg (3,200 run), Garrick Roemer (800 run) and two distance-relay teams, the Hornets coasted to victory by scoring 165 team points.

Pioneer finished second with 82 points and Ypsilanti third with 75.

The strong finishes by Ypsilanti and Pioneer can be partially attributed to the efforts of Austin Sanders and Drake Johnson.

Sanders posted impressive times in the 100 (:10.7) and 200 (:21.82) dashes to win both events. He was also the anchor on the victorious 400 and 800 relay teams.

The senior is gearing up for a run at multiple titles at the Division 1 state championships June 2 at East Kentwood High School, but said the next two weeks will be critical in his approach.

“I feel like all the hard work like speed-training is helping me out. By the time states comes, I do think I can get my 100 time down to 10.6," he said. "I just have to keep training and let all the hard work pay off.”

Johnson is the two-time reigning state champion in the 110 hurdles and looked poised to defend his crown, even though he wasn’t giving it his all.

“I wasn't really going 100 percent. I was going like 85, maybe 80 percent," he said. "I was just trying to qualify and get my good spot so I can be towards the middle of the track in every event.”

Johnson also won the 300 hurdles and the Pioneers also received a first-place effort from pole vaulter Tyler Leach.

Other regional champions in the girls meet included Huron's Maya Long (200, 400) and Kennedy Beazley (800) and Ypsilanti's Endia Francois (high jump, long jump).

The top two finishers in each event, plus individuals that eclipsed MHSAA qualifying times advanced to the state championship meet. A complete list of Washtenaw County qualifiers:

Wendy Szuminski didn't win the pole vault, Sherry Wan did. They both vaulted 10'2" like mlive reported, but Sherry Wan had no misses on lower heights while Wendy Szuminski did, which is why Sherry won, not Wendy. Even if it had been a tie, there would have been a jump off to determine a winner. Here is a correct record of the results: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/MeetResults.aspx?Meet=146386#13319
