Monroe High School 215-pound wrestler David Pope sat back and watched as the dual meet against Chelsea unfolded in front of him. After his team started the match in a 21-0 hole, a lot had to happen for the meet to come down to his match. The final match.

The Trojans didn't erase the deficit as dramatically as Chelsea had gained it, but chipped away nonetheless. After losing at 285, 103, 112 and 119, Monroe only surrendered two more weight classes the rest of the way and trailed 31-29 heading into that final match, which is exactly how Pope wanted it.

After fighting off of his back and avoiding being pinned in the first period against Chelsea's Tim Shoemaker, Pope again fought off of his own back in the second, locked up a reverse half, and scored a fall at 2 minutes 42 seconds to give Monroe the 35-31 victory.

Monroe (16-8, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) went 2-0 at the SEC quad after beating Huron 66-9 earlier in the night. Chelsea, which beat Dexter 56-22, was 1-1; as were the Dreadnaughts, who beat Huron 75-6.
